Crankytown No. 3

Lately, I'm finding that the best thing in my Sunday-morning Star isn't some big investigative report but, rather, Aaron Barnhart's columns about what's on TV. That was certainly true with his piece yesterday about Al-Jazeera English.

It's a long essay in which Barnhart, the Star's TV critic and small-screen blogger, spends a few months watching Al-Jazeera online and comes away with the impression that it's "the most important English-language cable channel to come along since Fox News."

As Barnhart notes, "It's everything our cable news isn't: global, meaty, consequential and compelling in the best sense of the word."

Here's what makes me cranky, though: Barnhart reports that our local cable providers, Time Warner and Comcast, say there isn't any interest in offering the channel to Kansas City subscribers. Really truly? I don't remember a note in my Time Warner bill asking me whether I'd sign up, but I would in a second. And like Barnhart, I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who could stand a little real news. -- C.J. Janovy
