Crankytown: Kit Bond

Hey, how does everyone feel about the latest war news? As in (if you didn’t already know this years ago), we’re losing it. And, in the six years we’ve been fighting the Orwellian “war on terror,” we’ve made al-Qaida stronger.

Several Republicans are now coming to Jesus on the insanity of this war – even Kansas Sen. Pat Roberts, who’s been a predictable supporter of the Bush administration, seems to be wavering. But who’s not? Why, Missouri’s Kit Bond, of course.

This week, Bond told David Goldstein, the Star’s Washington correspondent, that the realization we need to get the hell out of Iraq is “extremely disappointing.” Bond continued: “It sends a very important message to al-Qaida that you are about to win the war.… It sends a deplorable message to the 150,000 American men and women who are risking their lives to carry out the mission.”

Uh, frankly, the message we ought to be sending the 150,000 American men and women who are risking their lives is that we’re bringing them home.

But then, it would be foolish to expect anything different from Bushie Bond. Back in May, when the Senate Intelligence Committee (on which Bond is the ranking Republican) declassified reports from January 2003 – reports predicting, according to The Washington Post, “that the overthrow of Saddam Hussein and subsequent U.S. occupation of Iraq could lead to internal violence” and that “U.S. actions would provide a boost to Islamic extremists and terrorists in the region” -- Bond squealed in protest.

His committee’s inquiry, he wrote in a May 25 press release, “has become too embroiled in politics and partisanship to produce an accurate and meaningful report.” Ssshyeah, right.

Bond will never change. The rest of us, however – the increasing majority of those of us who want out of this war -- should probably consider changing our relationship with him. The problem is, Missourians – even good Democrats -- are addicted to the guy because he delivers a near-daily fix of federal funding for projects benefiting all sorts of constituencies. That makes me so cranky. – C.J. Janovy

That is because all the Senators that are bailing are up for re-election. Bond doesn't have to worry about 2008. At least Bond is screwing with Graves/Roe.

Bond does more than bring home the federal money. He works at reaching out to the African American community in KC like no other (even some KC mayoral candidates have forgotten to work this important base vote). Bond is very smart. In every primary he has ever had, he's barely to the right of his opponent. In ever general, Bond is sober and very moderate. Bond always wanted to know Mayor Cleaver's funding requests, and then they became Bond's funding requests.

Russell - I couldn't figure out if you were talking about Iraq or the Revolutionary War. In Iraq, the occupying force is fighting. The folks in Iraq perceive us as the "them." In the Revolutionary War, we were fighting the occupying force, the British "them." Bin Laden has nothing to do with Iraq. If he did, surely our control of the air, land and water (and oil) would allow us to get his worthless little butt.

Speaking of a great service to the world, we could feed most of the hungry in the world with the $30 Billion a quarter we send on the war.

Bond has lots at stake. So do others in Congress, like Sen. Webb (D-Va).

You defeatists are so predictable. Coalition forces currently control all the land area and air space in Iraq. The terrorist militias have absolutely no chance in heaven or hell of ever beating us. The only way for them to win is through the media weakening our will. Al Queda and its affiliates must be destroyed. You know Al Queda don't you? The same Al Queda every Democrat in Congress denied was in Iraq three years ago. The same Al Queda that would gladly behead you and your family unless they convert or enslave you. Let me point out since we have been on offense, terrorists they have not been able to mount an attack against us. The civilians, the women and children and old people here in the US have been safe because we decided the fight needed to be taken to the places where it originates. Bringing the troops home now is the losers way out. That is what Bin Laden saw in us after Somalia and led him to plan 9/11. The troops are doing exactly what they are trained for. If they are there for the next fifty years and it prevents the next 9/11 or first nuclear dirty bomb they have done us, and the world a great service.
No one in congress is more aware of the stakes in this war than Senator Bond. His son is a Scout/Sniper in Iraq and I can tell you the Senator knows what every parent fears. As of last Sunday it was a month since he even got an email from his son. Your smarmy attack is uncalled for and cowardly. The amount of time we have there is long, but no longer than our own war for independence but I guess you wouldn't want to fight that war either.
