Edwin R. Hall looked surprised to see me when he walked into his side of the visitation room at the Johnson County Detention Center on July 14. He wasn’t surprised because of who I was – I’d already sent him a letter introducing myself and explaining that I was going to try to come and talk to him – but he was surprised at who I wasn’t. He’d been expecting a visit from his wife, Aletha.
“Is my wife out there?” is the first thing he asked me as he sat down on his side of the glass partition. He was wearing a gray-and-white striped, county-issued shirt and pants.
I was wearing jeans and a high-necked, boyish T-shirt. I mention this only because some authoritative-sounding voices on the Pitch Plog insist that I went looking like a floosy (emphasis mine, spelling theirs), showing lots of leg and cleavage. Usually I wouldn’t be able to remember what I wore on a Saturday four weeks ago, but I remember what I wore to see Hall. Jails require conservative clothes. I didn’t even want to wear anything particularly feminine, because it had crossed my mind that he may not be a big fan of women, given the crime he’s accused of and what we’ve heard about his childhood.
Hall was worried about where his wife was. “If you’re in here and she tries to come see me, they won’t let her in,” he said.
“Are you only allowed one visitor per weekend?” I asked.
“I – I have nothing to say to you,” Hall answered, as if he’d already decided not to answer any reporter’s questions, no matter how mundane. “I don’t mean to be rude, but I can’t talk to you.”
“You can’t, or you won’t?” I asked.
“Both,” he said.
We stared at each other a minute longer, and I could see his mind was made up. I’d written my number down in the letter I’d sent, so I told him, “You have my number. You can call collect.”
I left the jail feeling disappointed, even though I had told myself going in that Hall was probably not going to talk to me, whether he wanted to or not.
On Monday morning, I had several messages on my office phone. They were recordings from the jail's automated system, announcing that I had a collect call. I wondered if Hall had been trying to call me.
Later, in the afternoon, my phone rang. When I picked it up, I heard a click, then nothing. This happened several times in a row before I finally got a connection from the automated voice, telling me I had a collect call. I accepted, and it was Hall. He told me the phones were malfunctioning, and that he wasn’t trying to hang up on me.
Most of our conversation, which was about 12 minutes long, was off the record. But when we started discussing the possibility of speaking on the record, he said, “I need to talk to my lawyer before I can really give you anything. Right now I guess I can give you that of course, I maintain my innocence.”
When he said, “I can give you,” he meant for publication. Our conversation was on the record from that point on, and the Pitch published an excerpt from it on the Plog here.
I had low expectations that Hall would open up to me, so I was surprised when he started answering my questions. But the purpose of talking to Hall, for me, wasn’t to try to trick him into saying one thing or another or to grill him like a prosecutor.
I wanted to talk to him because no other reporter had bothered. Maybe they assumed that it was impossible, that they couldn’t get to Hall because of his attorneys, or maybe they tried and failed. But the fact is, I hadn’t heard his side of the story, and I thought he should be afforded the opportunity to speak for himself.
Now that he has, I hope he’ll speak to me again, and I hope that justice is served where it belongs: in court, and not on some Web forum. -- Nadia Pflaum

The medical examiner requested an animal be removed from the Halls' home and a fur sample be taken for testing as a control sample. Even if you can't read court filings, I'm sure you can read news articles which reiterate this.
