The Jackson County Jail's Expecting...

Lately, western Missouri seems to be attracting law enforcement personal who don’t understand pregnancy. First there were the two cops in January who let a Sudanese woman miscarry when they refused her medical treatment. Then in July an Independence cop came under fire for pulling over a pregnant woman and forcing her to lie on her stomach on the ground. And now, the Jackson County Detention Center has reportedly hired a new director of corrections who’s leaving her last job under a cloud of similar bad press.

According to a story in the Times-Tribune of Scranton, Pennsylvania, the Lackawanna County Prison Warden, Janine Donate, is resigning to take the Jackson County spot. To be fair, it looks like she knew how to run the jail. Lackawanna County officials credited her with achieving the prison’s first rating of 100 percent compliant with state guidelines in a March inspection. And Lackawanna prison board chairman and county commissioner A.J. Munchak – whose office rerouted my call to the PR department, which hasn’t returned my call -- is quoted as saying Donate raised the bar for prison administration.

Munchak also said the recent leave has nothing to do with the birth of a baby in a Lackawanna prison cell on July 10. As good as she normally was at running the show, Donate had a hell of an off day when prisoner Shakira Staten gave birth alone in a camera-monitored cell, four hours after announcing that she’d gone into labor and needed medical attention. At least that’s how her attorney puts it in her federal civil rights suit. The prison board is conducting an internal review and no one seems to have any explanation why Staten wasn’t taken to a hospital.

In an explanation that looks like it’s supposed to be comforting to Pennsylvanians but disturbs me, Munchak says Donate was interviewing for the Jackson County job before Staten had her baby. So if that’s the case, couldn’t we find anybody to run the show that wasn’t in the midst of an internal review, especially considering recent events in the metro?

I’m sure Jackson County Detention Center manager James McCoy could help me out with that, or direct me to someone who could, but so far he hasn’t returned my calls either. – Peter Rugg

It is hard to beleive that anyone that deems
itself not criminally insane or members of the human species could blame the victims of these
atrocities. And they will be the first to call the Ted Bundys, John Wayne Gaceys, Tim
Mcveighs and Jeffery Dahmer types MONSTERS!
The important point is that these criminals
were not charged with murder and attempted,
murder.
That proves it is not just a few bad cops
problem as they like to say but it,s the corrupt goverment1

I think that the main point is missed here. If this pregnant woman was taking care to be home and not out committing crimes she wouldn't have been in jail in the first place. What a rag.

You know it's nothing new to have officials not call back or respond to these horrific incidents. When the system does finally wake up and smell the coffe on these crooked cop murderers, maybe only one or two babies will have died.
