A federal jury today convicted Saundra McFadden-Weaver of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and six individual counts of wire fraud. The charges stemmed from a $400,000 loan McFadden-Weaver took out on a house in Lee's Summit that she never intended to live in.
The Kansas City Star is reporting that McFadden-Weaver quoted John 8:32 -- "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free" -- after the verdict was read. Showing a lack of originality in the face of adversity, the former Kansas City, Missouri, councilwoman quoted the same scripture in January, when the city's ethics commission looked into the Lee's Summit home purchase.
McFadden-Weaver, 47, has led a turbulent public life. An ordained minister, she sued the African Methodist Episcopal church for sexual harassment in 1998. As a 3rd District councilwoman, she survived a recall attempt but failed to win re-election.
Now she's a felon. -- David Martin
