With the American Corrections Association in town at Bartle Hall for the past few days, I’d though I’d hang out and see what I could learn from our nation’s finest prison guards and administrators. I got to discuss the latest ACA Buyers Guide of Correctional Products and Services with some of the attendees at the water fountain and in between meetings. Here’s some of the things I heard this week:

• “Yeah, those are really fun for the kids.”

-- Regarding the ironman bunks used predominately in juvenile detention facilities and behavioral health care, notable for their optional slide rails and suicide-resistant design!

• “Pretty good bedding for a rapist.”

-- In reference to the Moduform bed, the corrections furniture leader for more than 20 years. It’s said to be totally resistant to bleach-based cleaners, aiding in control of blood-born pathogens.

• “It’s the places with all the money that never know how to run the show.”

-- One man’s reaction to the Magal-Senstar outdoor perimeter intrusion detection system that detect prisoners cutting, climbing or lifting the fence.

• “Well, you have to have something to do. I’d rather buy the gun locker, though.”

-- Response when questioned about the greeting card listing from the Keefe Group, the nation’s leading supplier for the correctional commissary market.
