Remember when you moved into your second apartment, the one that was so much bigger than the first? It felt a bit weird right off, like when you weren’t sure what to do in that thing the neighbors call the vestibule. It sort of feels like that when you walk into the new, comparably spacious Danny Edwards BLVD Barbecue.
If you went to Edwards’ old location, you know that the walk-in-closet-sized restaurant was always so packed that, if you ran out of sauce, you could dip your fries into a half dozen strangers’ plates.
The new space, at 2900 Southwest Boulevard, isn’t only spacious, but it’s pretty damn trendy for a Q joint. There’s exposed rafters, stainless steel counters and a modern-looking kitchen that replaces the mini cooking space in the old location.
But most important, Edwards brought his fantastic barbecue with him. I know these are fightin’ words, but Edwards’ has the best pulled pork sandwich in town. It’s juicy, smoky, has bits of bark and is served on a fresh bun. It comes with a shot of cinnamony sweet sauce that – while it doesn’t say barbecue to everyone – goes perfectly with his well-smoked meats.
Among the things that made the move is the pink pig that once adorned the old location. Edwards’ mascot showed signs of wear, including a pair of new concrete ears.
Over at his old location on Grand, the only sign of life was drummer Edward Humes practicing on a bucket. Edwards was evicted to make way for a planned office tower. Just the same, Edwards has had a constant stream of customers to his new location across from Schutte Lumber. Downtown lost an old standard when Edwards left, but at least it’s not much of a drive for that pulled pork and cinnamon sauce. – Eric Barton
