Hallmark is outsourcing work to China, costing dozens of Missourians their jobs.
Carrollton Specialty Products Co. is closing two plants after losing a substantial piece of the card assembly work it performs for Hallmark. A facility in Mexico, Missouri, will close on December 20. A plant in Carrollton, 70 miles east of Kansas City, will fold its last Peanuts birthday card some time early next year. The operations employ about 175 people.
“It was a surprise to us, and it certainly wasn’t something that was pleasant to hear,” Carrollton Specialty CEO Erin Boster says.
Thanks to Hallmark, Carrolton will have to shut down one of its Missouri plants.
Carrollton Specialty has worked for Kansas City-based Hallmark since 1990. Boster says she is losing assembly and packaging business to companies that print Hallmark cards, some of which are overseas. “It’s true that part of the work is going to China,” she says.
Workers who lose their jobs can apply to work at Carrollton Specialty’s remaining plant in Moberly, Missouri. Moberly, however, is 40 miles from Mexico, and even further from Carrollton. “I don’t know how much response we’ll have,” Boster says.

I am very sad to be losing my job at Carrollton. It has been a great place to work and Dick has been a great plant manager. He had treated everyone fairly and cares about their future. He,sadly is losing his job as well. Hallmark outsourcing is unfortunate for all of us. So, Haxel Hater, do everyone a favor and get lost!!!
I for one, would like to know what is going to the Haxel family? I'm sure they will be given gas money and their fair share to drive to Carrollton, MO. I for one think Dick is the biggest dick ever! He is a gutless jerk that is drunk all the time.
I agree w/ anonymous, I have seen so much crap working at Carrollton Specialty. It's not like there's alot to choose from as far as work in Moberly, so that's why I stay. I see favoritism ALL over the place. People being told to sign the bid for a guaranteed job, others sitting get good rated jobs at all times, andwhat is with the medical and personnel staff? The personnel staff is rude, and they do thing improperly, biggest brown nosers of Sue and Peggy. The medical, OMG where do they find such winners? Let's hope no one gets seriously hurt. I mean really the nurse had the nerve to ask a potential new employee to dump someone else's urine, C'MON!!! How lazy can you be?
And that poor guy that hurt his back last year, look at the crap he had to go through, and still not right. These people take advantage of the fact that there is such little work around the area, and unfortunately, we have to do something in an effort to survive, but I guarantee, I will never stoop to the "kiss-ass" level thinking it will do something for me. I have seen far too much, and am better than that. Iwill however ride this out , in hopes of reaping the free schooling benefits. Thanks, Anonymous for not being a chicken and telling it like it is.
Already did. Of course there is nothing worse than Carrollton Specialty, so even McD's would be better employment. Too bad they wouldn't take your loser ass. Hope you've been investing in that 401k plan the whole 12 years, cuz' you'll need everything you can get when you wake up. LOL!!! :)
I too currently work for Carrollton Specialty Products in Moberly. I would like to say that in my 12 years of employment there, never once have I been mistreated (like dirt). Yes there has been some ups, and has been some downs, (can anyone say there has never been ups and downs at their job????) but hey...what can I say, I work in AC when it is 100 outside, I don't get dirty, (unless its a bit of glitter...haha) and there is always room for advancement. Anytime I have ever had a problem, I was able to talk to my supervisor and get the problem resolved. If I needed to, I knew that I was always able to talk to our plant manager. I don't feel that I have ever been passed up for a "favorite". They bid each job that comes up, and I feel that everyone gets a fair chance. Honestly, if it is that bad, then I don't understand how come the person who made the comment above is still working there. I have a feeling you are someone who has been there just as long as I have. Erin and the Stout family, I THANK YOU for employing me these last 12 years. I can proudly say, I will be there with you until the end, when and IF it comes. If we keep doing rework from CHINA...I think we will be good for a bit. ANONYMOUS...THIS WAS FOR YOU. By the way, you might wana go ahead and try to find a better job where you won't get treated like dirt. I hear McDonalds is hiring.
I currently work for carrollton specialty in moberly, and honestly I am looking forward to the plant's closing. Of course we won't be told until the last minute, but I think most of us are smarter than they think we are. The company is so improperly ran, the employees, (unless you are a favorite) are treated like dirt, it's time we move on to better things in our lives. Besides, rumor has it, all employees left jobless will be eligible for unemployment for 2 years, while the government pays for schooling. How can we go wrong? I say 3 CHEERS to carrollton specialty going down. "You reap what you sew" Erin-This is for you.
I used to work in the Carrollton Specialty Products in Carrollton, and the closing of this operation is going to hit Carrollton HARD! I feel so badly for all those women and men who work there and are now losing the job that some have had for 20 years!!! It's a horrible thing that's happening... what is America coming to....? Terrible!
I've wanted to buy American-made products for several months now, especially since all the recalls. Have you tried to limit yourself to American-made products? I suggest you give it a try. If you're not ready to do that, google a few of the articles written by people who have. It's almost impossible. The clothes are made in America, but the dye isn't, or the thread isn't, or the cloth isn't. Toys are a nightmare. Appliances? Forget it.
Give it a try, then see what you think about boycotting things not made in American.
