Lamest. Quarterback. Competition. Ever.

By CHRIS RASMUSSEN

To follow the translucent Chiefs organization, it is necessary to ascribe meaning to small signals, much as a Kremlinologist would analyze the seating charts at a Politburo meeting.

So when Adam Schefter's article on NFL.com suggests Tyler Thigpen may push Brodie Croyle for playing time (hat tip to the House of Georges blog), I can only offer two explanations of the motivation behind Chiefs president Carl Peterson and coach Herm Edwards:

a) They want to give a message to Croyle that his job is not secure so he will work hard in the

thigpen.jpg
off-season

b) They are assuring Croyle will start, as Tyler Thigpen is his only competition

So let's look at the participants in what shapes up as the lamest Chiefs quarterback battle since Todd Blackledge and Steve Fuller battled for playing time in the mid-80s.

Brodie Croyle starred at the University of Alabama, where he met his wife

kellicroyle.jpg
Kelli. A former Junior Miss winner, Kelli became an Internet sensation after displaying the poise and, um, physical attributes that Croyle frequently lacked in the pocket last year. Brodie landed Kelli with his sophistication, as evidenced bythis quote uttered on HBO's Hard Knocks documentary last year: "Camp should be a breeze after going through all the marriage stuff. Stressful time for the women folk."

Croyle was nicknamed "Blu-Ray" last yearby Priest Holmes for his laserlike arm, not for the additional speed he processes information. He looked lost and confused last year as a starter, compiling a 0-6 mark in 2007.

Tyler Thigpen starred at Coastal Carolina, whose mascot is a Chanticleer. A

CoastalCarolinaChanticleer.jpg
Chanticleer is a rooster that is a prominent character in a section of The Cantebury Tales as well the 1992 animated movie "Rock-A-Doodle" starring Glen Campbell and Charles Nelson Reilly. The chanticleer eludes a fox's capture in both stories, a relevant story for one protected by the Chiefs' porous offensive line.

According to Schefter's article, the performance in which Thigpen impressed Chiefs officials was a drive against the Chargers last season in which he completed two of six passes and ended in an interception in the endzone.

So expectations are low.

Have you seen the commercial where Hasselbeck snaps the ball behind the tiny line and gets instanstly crushed? That was the Chiefs line last year. What the hell was Croyle supposed to do?

I don't know a thing about Thiggy, but Croyle will prove you wrong. Have fun picking all the feathers out of your mouth when you're eating crow.

None of these QB's are greats. Brodie got rushed in last yr behind a line that couldnt get it done. Play calling was prolly the worst. Rookie coordinator with a kinda rookie team? I dunno, but it was ugly. This year will be better. Chans experience makes it easier for him to adjust under game conditions. And the D that was almost ready to do it all, will have enough time off the field to get it done, this year. Watch. Have Fun. Go CHIEFS!

The, Lamest. QB. Article. Ever.

What does Croyle's wife have to do with anything? Sounds like jealousy on your part, kid. Maybe they should bring in some competition for your spot...

ron, you have to be kidding.

Manning was the #1 pick (meaning he took over a crappy team *and* had a more proven pedigree than Croyle). And Brady WON THE SUPER BOWL IN HIS FIRST SEASON AS A STARTING QB.

Was Croyle put in the ideal position in his first year? No. But he had weapons (Gonzalez, Bowe) that others don't have in the NFL and did not win a single start.

Just because one is a Chiefs fan doesn't mean one drinks Red Koolaid blindly.

Sounds like another Croyle basher. Remember Peyton Manning's first full year?? 3-13.

Tom Brady didn't do much better.

Can't blame Croyle for hasty decisions when you are supposed to get 3-4 seconds in the pocket. Well let's see what he got. Two steps back and there is the other team, standing where the fullback lines up.

you quote Thig's stats in the Chargers game like you are taking a stab at him. There aren't many rookie QB's in the NFL who get on the field for the first time ever and do something spectacular. He did drive the O down the field on his opening drive that game although the end result (INT) wasn't his intent, I'm sure. If Thig would have thrown a TD to end that drive, what would you be saying now? I hope he surprises everyone in KC this year. He has what it takes.
In MY opinion, Chris, I think you didn't check facts or any actual information. You just threw out words without even thinking about it first.
Good luck to KC AND Thig this season.

But James, I guess my point here is that we're talking about Tyler Thigpen *who couldn't beat out Brooks Bollinger or Drew Henson* at Minnesota.

I'm just saying -- I might be wrong about Thigpen but the fact that Tyler Thigpen is mentioned as a serious option means we're scraping the barrel at QB this year.

Santos is already gone...they didn't keep him...the battle for #3 will be David Greene(UGA) and Chris Leak(UofF)....

What you fail to discuss is that Thigpen has much more mobility than Croyle and his arm strength is about the same....I don't think Thigpen will start the season as the #1 but if Croyle doesn't show Edwards something early look for Thigpen to get a few starts to try and give the team a jump start.

The QB they signed is Ricky Santos from the University of New Hampshire.

Kremlinologist and Charles Nelson Riley references + Kelli Croyle cleavage photo = best blog post of the day. It could only be topped by somehow working in a Roy Jones Jr. quote about how he picks up a lot of his moves from watching his chickens.

Don't forget about the QB they signed as a nondrafted free agent? Isn't his name Rudy? If not, I'm still going to call him that. What this team really needs is a quarterback named Rudy.
