It's been almost two years since the murder of homeless “lobbyist” and sex offender David Owen. The Kansas Capitol is much quieter – and less interesting – without Owen. But civil rights activist C.E. “Sonny” Scroggins is keeping Owen's memory alive.
Scroggins and the Stop the Violence Memorial Tree Dedication Committee will hold a candlelight vigil on Friday, June 13 at 8 p.m. at the Topeka homeless camp that Owen barged into the night of his murder.
Scroggins tells The Pitch in an e-mail that the National Coalition Against Homelessness and the local chapter of Biasbusters are asking the city to name the camp area after Owen.
“He deserves a memorial because of his dedication to the homeless -- a cause that many of us would not consider because of fear, cowardice or man’s inhumanity to man,” Scroggins writes. “David, We love you and miss you. God Bless You! We know you are in heaven still watching over the homeless and silently urging them to call their families and reconnect.”

Bias Busters of Kansas Action Statement
Setting the Record Straight
Oct. 23, 2008, Noon
"Molly Brown, the Teacher"
Williams Science and Fine Arts Magnet School, 1301 S.E. Monroe
Topeka, Kansas......Due to some misleading statements in todays media, and over the blogs and talk shows: For the record, Bias Busters of Kansas agrees with Blake West, President of the Kansas National Education Association, who said "Many policies don't ban political buttons or clothing for teachers unless the items are disruptive."
Bias Busters of Kansas is protesting to encourage USD 501 School District to revisit its policies, and make sure Americans rights are not overly restrictive. Our next Noon protest will at Lowan Hill Elementary School, 1101 E. 11th Street on 10-27-08
Per a conversation with "Molly the Teacher" and others who wore an Obama T-shirt, explained that the wearing of the shirt was an expression of pride, a celebration of Black History and not a political statement.
Bias Busters of Kansas asked someone who was heavily involved in the evolution of the National/International Black History Month Founder's Observance Commission for his opinion on whether this is a 1st Amendment violation issue?
Bias Busters has received information from other teachers over the past several months of similar disapproving behavior displayed by schools in the District. Molly the Teacher and others need some civil rights relief and uniform T-shirt/dress code regulations to handle situations such as this when they arise.
The group will target other schools in the district in the coming weeks (the home of Brown) until a workable solution has been developed for people who wear likenesses of Barack Obama, Sarah Palin, yet does not make a political statement or influence people in the school system to vote one way or another. More protest at schools across the district are being planned

I must say this without any reservation whatsoever, that Sonny Scroggins is an advocate for what is just and right. The fight that David Owens placed upon himself to help in anyway possible by the kind gestures of his nature to love those he did not know. His ability to reach out and touch people of all nationalities and ethnic backgrounds is a legacy that should not go unforgotten. Mr. Sonny Scroggins being an activist has now placed the burden upon himself that this love for those who have less is truly not because they want to have it that way but because there is a scripture in the bible that say "By the grace of God there go I". So Sonny keep up the great work and efforts in making sure the hungry are being fed, the thirsty are being given water, and the homeless are given shelter what a greater love a strong compassion, a conviction to help those who are in need of some form of help. I must close this out Sonny by saying, Jesus said when you have given to the least of those you have also given unto him. Remember there is no good or bad deed that goes unrewarded. May God Almighty continue to smile upon you and I will see you on the battlefield for the Lord.
