Does it count if the Royals win and nobody sees it?

Nielsen ratings validate the name of this blog: The Royals have the second smallest TV audience in baseball.

In a story about the astonishingly low ratings of the hometown Nationals, The Washington Post, quoting from an analysis of Nielsen research published in SportsBusiness Journal, says the Royals are attracting a TV audience of approximately 28,000 households. The Royals outperform only the Nationals -- D.C.'s team reaches a mere 9,000 homes.

The Royals' ranking is not surprising when market size is taken into consideration. Among MLB teams, only the Milwaukee Brewers draw from smaller metropolitan area. That, and the fact that the Royals aren't very good.

Still, it's kind of weird to think that if the people watching the Royals on TV on a given night fought the fans at the stadium, it wouldn't be a big mismatch.
