On a muggy Thursday afternoon, Andy was walking with an out-of-drag DeDe DeVille down 39th Street. His red-checkered shirt caught my eye. He paired the shirt with loose-fitting, knee-length shorts, which were navy blue with white pinstripes. The overall effect — along with the hat — is what I’d call “jaunty.”

“It’s city mouse meets country mouse. It’s country-inspired because it’s hot,” he said.

Andy works at Re-Runs, the vintage store, which is where he got his shirt. The flower pin, which has an old button in the middle, came from a West Bottoms bazaar.

I’m a big fan of wearing different patterns all at once, and it’s hard to pull this off without looking like a bad parody of the ‘70s. I think Andy did it really well, though — I love how the old fabrics in his flower pin look against the bright-red checks of his shirt. The dark-yellow band on his hat looks like a vintage tie, and its colors and vintage-y feel also complement the pin.

Another great thing about the hat? “It’s ventilated, so I like that,” Andy said.

Is the blue thing standing next to him dressed in old fabric the "flower pin"?
