Last Saturday, I was out at Paddy O’Quigley’s at 119th Street and Roe for a karaoke birthday party. SoJoCo karaoke drew a preppy crowd. Guys in khaki shorts, flip-flops and T-shirts emblazoned with beer slogans or Greek letters clustered at the bar. Groups of women sported the official KC going-out look, which consists of strapless dresses, heels and shoulder-length sleek hair.

Because of her cute lacy sweater and maroon-purple belt, Lisa stood out from the rest of the crowd.

I liked how she wore the belt outside of her sweater, which she said she got at a thrift shop. That belt-sweater combo and slingback black flats really jazzed up her black cotton Old Navy dress, which had a lacy outer layer with a circle pattern.

The 23-year-old was drinking with a guy friend. I asked if they came out for the karaoke. “We just ended up here, honestly. We wanted a couple of beers,” she said. Lisa lives in Midtown and works in finance at Sprint. She was also wearing a silver hoop nose ring, which went through her septum. I asked if she has to take it out for work. “Yeah. It sucks,” she said.
