KC’s a pretty casual town, and we’ve all gotten used to seeing guys wearing baseball caps everywhere. That’s fine at, say, an actual baseball game or during a weekend errand run, or if you’re doing something that requires protection from the sun. But it really drives me insane when I see a guy in a baseball hat at a semi-nice restaurant (i.e. anything above the level of Applebee’s) or at a non-casual event. It’s like, come on. Try to make an effort.
So, when I saw Russell at the 119th Street Paddy O’Quigley’s on Saturday night, I appreciated the fact that he (a) sported a stylish hat, and (b) the rest of his outfit was nice and neat. And this at a sports bar’s karaoke night! His girlfriend, Lizz, was adorable, too; she wore a summery floral knee-length dress and these awesome cowboy-looking boots with a short heel.
I wish I had taken a picture of the back of Lizz’s hair, too – in front, it looked like a bob, but in back, it was stacked and layered. It was kind of like Posh Spice’s hair, but not as drastic. It looked very modern and hip.
Russell, 32, and Lizz, 30, met six years ago, when they worked at Sprint Yellow Pages. They live in Overland Park and came out for some karaoke entertainment.
“We’re watching people making fools of themselves. Tonight, not many people are making fools of themselves – it’s a little disappointing,” Russell said. “There aren’t as many drunk people, and that’s what karaoke is about.”
I asked Lizz about her cute dress. She told me that she thought it was hilarious that she was being interviewed about fashion on this particular night. “I really like clothes, but what I’m wearing happens to be from 15 years ago,” she said.
“That’s the third complement you’ve gotten tonight,” Russell said to her.
As for Russell, he said he got his hat at J. Crew and his shirt was Calvin Klein. I asked him if he was going for any sort of look.
“He makes his own look based on things he likes,” Lizz said.
Russell tried to sum up his sartorial mission statement, but admitted that it was hard, since that’s not something he’s thought about. “It’s casual, but…” he stopped a moment to think. “It’s not like I just walked in from mowing the lawn.”
