I was making my usual weekend library stop when I saw Yumi Taylor at the Plaza branch. On that hot Sunday afternoon, she had dressed comfortably and casually, and I thought she looked very pretty and cool. When I stopped her for an interview, though, she was embarrassed – she said she was wearing a four-year-old dress and had no makeup on.
I thought her dress was really cute. I’m not a huge fan of tie-dye, but the effect on her dress is so subtle that from a distance, it looked like a fern pattern. I love that shade of green, too – it’s very calming and it brought out the green in her hazel eyes. I’m all about the summer dress, too, especially for errand runs. It’s easy, it’s cool and it doesn’t make you look like you just rolled out of bed to stumble into Target or whatever.
Yumi bought her dress at Oopsy Daisy’s (a boutique that used to be in Brookside). She was going through her closet – she tries to do that every once in a while to find stuff that she normally doesn’t wear – and came across the dress again. “I’m trying not to shop now. I found it and said, ‘oh gosh.’ On a day like this, I try to wear as less clothes as possible,” she said. She also sported flip-flops and her pedicure was great – the tips of her toes were painted purple. Her big toes had a flower painted on, along with glittery silver lines.
The 40-year-old photojournalist came to pick up a book called The Power of Now, which she said was also an Oprah recommendation. Because of the sticky weather, she decided to stay at the library to read, and had curled up on a chair by the big windows that face the Plaza. “I took a little nap – along with some other people here,” she confessed.
