I was walking through Westport when I passed Maggie Adams. The 19-year-old was on her way to lunch at Thai place, and her bold, casual look definitely caught my attention. I loved her accessories, which included black suede flat boots from Urban Outfitters, bright red lipstick, a red bow in her hair and ball-shaped leopard print earrings.
She also sported this great gray-colored nail polish, which came from Beauty Brands (China Glaze brand). I had just seen the August Marie Claire cover, which had Maggie Gyllenhaal wearing a similar shade of nail polish, so I was excited to get this tip that it was available in KC.
Maggie works at the Betsey Johnson store on the Plaza, and she’s a huge Betsey fan. “She’s really different; she’s not afraid to take risks. And you don’t make any progress unless you take risks,” she said. I asked Maggie to describe her style inspiration, and she had to think about it for a moment. “I don’t care about function – I don’t roll out in sweats, don’t do comfort,” she said. There’s usually a statement behind her outfits, she said.
When I got back to the office, Maggie had left a message on my voice mail, inviting me to the store for a Betsey Johnson 30-year anniversary party. I stopped by and snapped this photo of Maggie and her co-workers, KC Dwyer (left) and Julia Kim.
