Esquire's Peter Martin hung out at the Young Republicans Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C., in May and found three Alex P. Keaton-types from Kansas and Missouri. Martin discovered one of my favorite Republicans and a familiar face to the Kansas press corps: Stephanie Wing, spokeswoman for Kansas Secretary of State Ron Thornburgh.

Martin quotes Wing talking about the other party's nominee. "I think he's a great candidate," Wing says of Barack Obama. "We don't agree on a lot, but he's gotten young people interested in politics."

I called Wing to ask the 27-year-old from KCK if she was catching flack for praising Obama.

"I have," Wing confided. "But I stand by it."

Wing, who is also vice chair of the Kansas Young Republicans, says ending up in Esquire was "completely random."

"I sat next to Peter at the luncheon with Newt Gingrich and started chatting with him," Wing says, "and somehow ended up one of the folks that he talked to for the story."

Martin also talked with Jason Klemm, a 31-year-old from St. Louis, and Monica Durrwachter, a 24-year-old from St. Peter, Missouri.

Klemm says Republican presidential candidate John McCain "isn't really a Republican," but Klemm says he'll vote for McCain because "he's the lesser of two evils."

Do you think if The Pitch sent "Clothes Whores" reporters to a Hollywood Young Democrats luncheon that they would find anyone capable of finding a single nice thing to say about McCain or someone willing to admit Obama isn't necessarily the definition of Democratic standard?

One thing I do know is that Nadia and Jen would come back with better pictures. Also, I feel confident that The Pitch art staff would rock out a better cover.
