Has anyone else noticed that nearly every person wearing clothes like the ones banned from P&L are the guys that stare at you while you're walking? They stare at you all the way by like they want to fight. They don't do it alone, but they love to do it in groups. Good for you P&L!!

The Power and White district.....I love it. I remember seeing some nicely dressed black folk there and they weren't being harassed. Racism? Anti-thugism is more like it! Profiling gangsters? I wouldn't want to see whites or Mexicans in baggy clothes either. It's pretty easy to conceal a weapon in clothes like that. People that wear clothes like that want to be percieved as tough guys, though I see them as scared boys that wouldn't be so tough outside of their group. However, wearing clothes like that does let everyone around you know your intentions. This dress-code has nothing to do with race. Find another issue to complain about.

Becca you should go back to Baltimore! We don't need your kind around here. Kansans are pretty f'n accepting of others where I live so I don't appreciate your generalizations. You're not very bright are you?

n2realcities,

Are you actually trying to glean white support with your comments or just stir the pot a bit so fewer of us want you around? Smart black folks wish there weren't black folks like you so there would be a chance of ending racism. Keep driving a spike between whites and blacks and portions of the next generation will continue to hate each other. Continue with your childish comments and your behavior and my sons will see it, assume all blacks are this way, and refuse to hire them when they make it to upper management like their old man. OR, start considering the crap that spills out of your mouth and people won't even discern between the different colors of skin.

Blacks have done some amazing things in the past couple of decades. Crying racism over a dress-code in an upscale area is really backsliding on the progress you've made. It makes you sound like you're begging for pity. I remember a comic saying that the reason black folks didn't use to get respect is b/c the only movies they were in, there was a black guy that said, "Ain't nobody ever gave me nuthin". My ancestors came over in the late 1800's and I could exclaim that "nobody ever gave us nuthin" but I'd rather exclaim that I've gone out and got my something myself. Plenty of great blacks have done it already and I'm sure they aren't worried about the dress code. Find success for yourselves and get in where you fit in. I know I don't fit in with the P&L crowd.

Cry me a river folks. This is ridiculous. Why all the comments about black men taking white women? I could say some pretty nasty things, but I'm trying to keep myself at a level above you.

I went to the P&L district with my buddy during Rockfest. He is a cracker (as many blacks refer to me when I'm alone and they're in a group) and he was wearing a white t-shirt. Guess what, they kicked his ass out and we had to go buy another shirt for him so we could go back in. I've never seen so many drunk people being so well-behaved. Maybe this is why there is a dress-code. Poor, poor, pitiful, black me. It's never my fault. Oppression, the white man is holding me down. WHITES FREED THE BLACKS AND SUPPORTED THEIR RIGHT TO VOTE. We welcome those of you that want the same opportunities that we want. Racism this and racism that. I'm subjected to racism but I never cry about it and wouldn't protest something as stuffy as a dress-code to bring the racism issue into the limelight.

BTW, my one visit to P&L was all it took. I'd rather be a little more rowdy so I'll go downtown where I can wear my torn jeans and act like a hulligan. I'd rather be with a bunch of roughnecks that wear trashy rock-and-roll clothes, have mowhawks, colored hair, narly piercings and occasionally like to fight a bit. P&L doesn't want people like me there and I have no problem with that. They're trying to create an environment that is comforting to a certain type of people, but it has nothing to do with race!

Becca, drr, duh, dur, dur da, dur. We should require an IQ test before people can vote. You must be one of the folks that voted in the most anti-American president in history.

Dress Code is appropriate in the Power and Light. All this racism talk is ridiculous. In prisons people are required to wear form fitting clothes with shirts tucked in and pants cannot be sagging. Why? Not because that rule is racist, it is because it brings a positive image to the person. Famous people threw out history, (Martin King, Einstein, Abraham Lincoln, BIll Clinton, obama, etc...) have worn form fitting clothes. Majority of news, television shows, and rap videos portray people with baggy clothes as uneducated and somewhat violent.
If you decide that P@L is racist because of the dress code then you can also say that they are racist because of the high price of drinks. Its is known that People in the suburbs make more money than people in the urban(predominately minority) communities. By their high price drinks you could say they are trying to stop minorities from drinking so the majority(whites) can have the fun all by themselves because they can afford it.

It is kind of disturbing that people would think a dress code makes a place racist. I hear advertisements all the time for clubs in KCK on 103.3 which they announce the same dress code but since majority of the club is minorities, it is not considered racist.

Also to RADICAL BLACK AGENDA 532, all that racist talk is asinine. You never lived in the slavery era. Me being Sicilian can say that the Moore's invaded sicily which "people had to endure slavery, racism, and then societally induced unequality for hundreds of years," but it would be ridiculous. Every race endured slavery and racism. Part of history my man.

The investigation on dress code conducted by kmbc showed that every race was treated the same. Conclusion to investigation showed no racism just strict dress code.

once again the black population want NO limitations put on their appearance or behavior,if there are any then its racism, i hope the power and light district stand firm firm and do not give into a small militant part of the population, if they do give in the district will fail, it will become crime ridden will lose patrons and become just another failed buisness, it has happened to how many once thriving malls in this city, when the control was lost over the people causing problems the crime went up people did not feel safe and left, it will happen to the district history will repeat itself,,

How dare you expect that developers and investors with millions of dollars invested want to assure that thugs who wear ganster clothing clean it up in this area. Wouldn't it all be just as nice to see underpants and sloppy cloths in an area they want to keep nice and upscale to assure success and a return on their investments? I just love those gangster clothing outfits. So nice and sophisticated. Just the types that I'd want to run into when taking my wife there for a night out.

Maybe we could make the district as crime free as any other inner city success that encourages gangster dressing. I'd feel much safer if we could all wear sloppy clothes when dinning out. It just makes the experience so much more asthetic and meaningful. Let's face it, the people wearing that type of clothing have so much money to spend in the area anyway. I just don't see what the problem is. Let's let those pillars of society that contribute so much anyway to our enjoyment wear whatever they want. It would be very disappointing to expect that they should look presentable when going to a nice area of town that's entertaining for the public. How dare you!

This whole P.L. dress code is really blown out of proportion. When you go out don't you want to dress to impress. Have any Black/white person wear jeans, tims and a white tee to ANY 10 clubs/bars in Kansas City and then poll how many of them got denied access. It's not just the district. I've been down there many times and here's my take. 1. They don't allow hip hop music. WRONG. Go inside the Cantina and just listen to "Back that Ass up" 2. They don't book black bands. WRONG. Don't you guys remember when Midnight Star played there last October. Doubt it. 3. The dress code discriminates against blacks. Not blacks....thugs. The place is nice and jeans, some stacys and a button down is more than appropriate. P.S. for the thugs scratchin their heads right now, those are Stacy Adams. A shoe. A DRESS shoe. Get some and move on. My concern is how the handled the whole Jazzy Jeff incident. Bullshit from end to end and I just may have to take my money elsewhere.

IF there is an actual dress code which prohibits long white t-shirts, baggy pants, and workman/combat boots, if may very well me deemed as directed towards Black people. With that being said, I am a Black female who knows how do dress down, dress casual, dress up, and everything in between. If I am going out for entertainment purposes, I will look decent. WOMEN do not appreciate a thug-wannabe-look-a-like. If you are a man, present yourself as a man, not as a copycat boy.
P&L is WRONG if they did create that dress code (or one quite similar to it) for the purposes of unwelcoming Blacks. No one is saying put on your Sunday best, but be decent. As far as we have come, we have yet so far to go.

Ok I read this entire discussion and was amused until Mi above me decided to write about things he obviously doesn't know anything about. I work at PBR and let me be clear about something, we do not now and have never discriminated against any race or gender or sexual preference or any other stereo type you can come up with. Furthermore, if you're going to talk about my patrons in that way it just goes to show who is really the prejudiced one....you, not us. Just because people come into PBR does not mean they wear skin tight levis. And their hats are worn forward the way they are made to be worn out of respect. And as for civilization Mi....P&L is civilized, Westport on the other hand is not. I feel safe inside the district which is more than I can say for how I feel at 3 a.m. in Westport and RACE has nothing to do with it. Oh and Becca honey we are in Missouri not Kansas. All the bars have a diverse group of people working there of all races and it's insulting them to claim this is a racial issue. It's not, it's a way of life and I would prefer to keep my life safe and the people around me respectful.

Wow, Bacca! That place is truly the "Power & White Distrct"... or white power something. I'm not from here either. Actually from another Asia. And will be moving as soon as I'm done with my work project. Never seen or heard such dump racism. In other places in America they try to at least make their positions make sense. "Do black people think this was built solely for them?" This is so rediculous statemnt. I'm not black and I don't wear tight clotes, and I'm also descriminated against. The clothes issue is just another tool to justify their mean behavior towards other kinds of people.

The cowboys at PBR, wearing skin-tight jeans so that their private parts show through for everyone to see is what I find offensive. And if this didn't fit so well into the cultural comfort zone of some of the truly fair-minded people of Kansas City, they'd be offended too. But, you're not, are you? I'd venture to say that if Black men began wearing their pants so tight that their private parts were bulging out at your female loved ones, you'd be all for banning tight Levis too, wouldn't you? This is what happened to my girlfriend and I at PBR. These people should be in the woods. Not in the middlw of civilization. And they get to wear their hats in the club. That's no good either.

He's given millions of tax-payer dollars from around the country to his liberal political friends. Now he wants to come over to God's Country, "KANSAS", and grab some more funds to funnel towards his liberal causes. To see what he's done with 'YOUR' money, just go to the link below. I'm from Baltimore, and never quite understood what attracted David Cordish to a town like Kansas. Now, I see. He tried his racist behavior in Baltimore and good white people turned against him. But, this is Kansas, where people, obviously think sorta backwards and write rediculous statements like these: "Does the Apollo club let in dudes with skinhead outfits?" Well, I'm have skinheads in my family and they all dress like polititians nowadays. So, I have to laugh when people here say things like: "Dress like a respectable and responsible adult, and you will be able to get into the district and enjoy all of the bars/clubs that it has to offer". Well, I guess if your clothes determine your behavior, then, everyone here dresses and behaves like skinheads. For the person that wrote: "How is this dress code different than what a lot of African-American owned establishments downtown require?" Well, I'm not from here, but, I never noticed there being a lot of African-American buisnesses downtown. Figured there was some code against it. You know, at first I thought it was a bit ironic that on P&L's web they don't even have a heading that reads "DRESS CODE". The only mention of it is in the paragraph on "CODE OF "CONDUCT". So, that made me go check Merriam Webster who defines "conduct" as a mode or standard of personal "behavior" especially as based on "moral principles". That's when it hit me. Cordish was attracted to the backward way of thinking that's so pervasive in this town. When you define someone's behavior based on what they wear, then, guys like those in my family (good ol boys and skinheads) can dress the part and be perceived and accepted as good people, and respectable. And places like PBR can become more accepted in the urban core than the good people who actually live in the urban core. Wow, talk about "spin!"...you guys are really good! Before I go, I have to comment on the forward thinking person that wrote this statement: "Power and Light is a hub for Black guys to pick up white girls." Well, you can call me (and a lot of other white women) backwards. But, I always thought that P&L was a great place for white women to pickup Black men.

Why is dress code such a big deal? Dont you guys dress up when you go to church? Dress for the occasion people.
We need tourists in Kansas City and protesting about dress code isn't helping.

There should absolutely be a dress code, just not exactly this one.

Ignoring the origins of the whole baggy pants thing, if you tried to get into P&L wearing just your boxer shorts, you wouldn't be allowed in, so the fact that you have a pair of pants clinging to your thighs doesn't change the fact that your underwear is still hanging out.

And I don't want to go into a restaurant and see people around me wearing clothes with profanity on them.

Point is- you know what kind of image you're presenting when you put on those baggy jeans, oversize hoodie, and sideways baseball cap. Same as when you put on a suit and a tie, or a pair of skinny jeans and a black tank top. White or black, you present the same image.

Hey All y'all-
I was stopped at the gate for wearing a light blue T shirt, and had to argue with the guard about what the color of my shirt really was. Eventually I just walked in- no apology from MR.NO LT. BLU TEE- just him yelling at me that he didn't like my attitude. If Power and Light took my tax money, are they entitled to my dignity as well? I should not have to go back home (to Midtown) to change my shirt. Regardless, it is easy to see Power and Light suffering for its arrogance in the dropping attendance. Cordish ran out local businesses, stood firm against light rail, and now wants to dictate what clothes are appropriate in the urban core? Really? Can't wait to see it deliver all that tax revenue.

Does anyone recall where this "urban clothing" style came from? Ultra-Baggy pants that shows off your underwear/buttcheeks started in PRISON as a way for a gay man to let other prisoners know that he is interested in gay activities (you figure it out). Now, black men everywhere are saying that since it is now part of their culture that it is racist to deny access based on this thug trash felon inspired way of dress. Why would anyone want to adopt a way of dress that was inspired by felons unless you want to be considered as part of the same group?

I can see everyone has a different stance on this dress code situation. So, allow me to give my experience. Myself(a white nurse) and my husband(a white government employee) went down to the power and light district to meet up with friends. When we got there we were informed that my husbands attire was not acceptable. Apparently his brand new $100 jeans has too many destructivee holes in them and he A WHITE MAN that works for the GOVERNMENT was not allowed in. So we went back to our hotel changed his jeans and walked right through with no problems. So call it what you may, but simply there is a time and place to wear certain things and this place is one of them. If I recall correctly America's Pub has the same dress code and nobody's lining up at there door protesting. Grow up, dress up, and have fun!

Also, I do realize that my comment above may indicate that I incorrectly think that P&L is privately owned. I realize that is not a privately owned business because it was our tax dollars that subsidized it (although certain individuals put more money into the project), but most tax payers are paying for a certain environment, a more upscale glitzy environment and that comes with a certain dress code. I think blacks are just as capable of stepping up their dress a notch. Look at the type of restaurants and bars in that area and tell me that baggy clothes and big t-shirts would be appropriate for that setting.

This is not a black or white issue, it's a dress code issue. They have every right to require a certain dress in their multi million dollar complex, just like any other privately owned business. I think it's racist to say that blacks are incapable of adhering to a well-dressed dress code and whites are somehow already more prone to properly dress for a more glamorous setting, like it just comes naturally to them. There are plenty of white men who prefer baggy clothes and t-shirts and are willing to dress up to go out on the town but for some reason it is racist to ask black men to wear nice clothes...It's just another example of liberal America trying to once again make every issue a race issue so they have something to complain about.

When I say its a cultural racist thing I mean yes Black people of all ages wear white-t's and pants that are baggier unfortunately you have the younger crowd that wear some of the same stuff but to an extreme. Can I document when I saw a group of black people turned away; well I remember the day but I didnt take video of it. I can also tell to the day's that white people got in with similar out fits and wasnt turned away. I can tell you about people dressing for the purpose of a themed bar and getting in. So I guess this tells me that if (wont happen) P&L ever open a hip-hop bar then the baggy white-T wearing people can get in because they are dressing for a theme.

I decided not to go back but its simply not for me at this point; too many stuck up clicks and Johnson county people that act like they own the area. How is this dress code any different than what a lot of schools require? How is this dress code different than what a lot of African-American owned establishments downtown require?

This is not about race no matter how you try and spin it. The simple fact of the matter is that most of these business cater to a crowd of over people over the age of 21 the nights that the dress code is in place. At this age should we not be able to expect that everyone dress in a manner that does not resemble an association with a criminal element, or if you were preparing for a night of laying on the coach eating Fritos? The are places of business, and all business have always under US laws reserved the right to refuse service to anyone. If you can't go out and enjoy a night on the town with out having to throw on clothing that makes others around you uneasy then why go? What some of the other posters have failed to recognize is that if our downtown area is going to continue to grow, and prosper, and more money is going to be put into rebuilding the dying areas of the city, people from outside the downtown area need to feel as if it is safe to travel into those areas or they will never visit them and we will jsut end up with another Crown Center and more inner urban plight. The PDL has created jobs, and re-vitilized an area of the city that was ignored for years. If they wish for it to continue to grow and be a healthy part of the city those concerned with the dress code need to acknowledge and accept that their are steotypes associated with that kind of dress that are founded in fact, and statistics. When you strap on a pair of baggy pants , a wife beater, and some timberlands you know what kind of message you are trying to send to those who see you. Don't be so niave to say that you don't. Same as if you throw on a suit and tie, or torn pants and a tie dyed shirt. You are trying to send a specific message to those who see you. The developers of PDL understand that they need people to feel safe down there to draw in the people with the most disposible income, and have put rules in place to ensure that. Maybe some of you should travel to like Boston, were their downtowns are thriving because people feel safe and the entire city is winning because of it. Get of your high horse and look at the world for how it is. Your gangster look or your hippy bum look make people uneasy, if you want to come down to PDL, dress with a little more sence towards what they want PDL to be. It's their business at stake not yours.

Its always easier to say get over it when its not you or your race that is targeted; it always easier to if thats not your style of dress. Now this is a cultural racist issue because it started as a black way of dressing and it is targeted to keep us out plain and simple. P&LD is not meant for black people and guess what they dont care how we fill or the other establishments in the area that had to shut down. Gus - can you document a single case of minority being turned away who was dressed properly (and not acting the fool)? I doubt that you can... other than heresay...

Similar dress codes are found in large cities. This is to set the minimum requirements for dress when you enter the district. Once you enter the district, the clubs/bars reserve the right to post their own dress code and refuse business to anyone. The dress code is to set a standard of dress for the district. It is not trying to stereotype anyone. When people dress in baggy pants and long white t's, they are wanting to be classified into a certain group. It's no coincidence that they all got up and put on the same style of clothes. They want to dress a certain way so people look at them as being thugish or gangsta. The P&L district is an upscale district with premium branding and prices. This isn't Westport People. Here's an Idea: Dress like a respectable and responsible adult, and you will be able to get into the district and enjoy all of the bars/clubs that it has to offer. Believe me, Cordish wants to offer the district to everyone. They are looking to make money like any other business.

i suppose you dress code supporters can all defend it in concept, but what about the execution, or all those stories about groups of minorities being turned away even when they fit the code?

another thing, some people say the code is clearly listed and other's say its not posted, which is it? can we have some real reporting on this? i feel like everyones all about debating it's fucked-upedness but noboyds really clearly reporting whats happenign.

The dress code has my full support. Its not a racist policy - its a business policy to protect an investment. Does the Apollo club let in dudes with skinhead outfits?

Mike S is on to us! Our plan was to endure slavery, racism, and then societally induced unequality for hundreds of years . . . all so, one day, we could make Mike S uncomfortable with our baggy clothing! Retreat! Retreat!

This is another example of the radical black agenda that continues to foster such racist attitudes in this country. These protestors look ridiculous and totally wasted their time. Cordish will not give in to the demands of a few people who want to look like thugs in their property! I can just see all the guys holding on to their pants around their knees walking around an upscale entertainment district! No one would come back. Do black people think this was built solely for them???!!! THIS IS NOT A SMALL TIME ATTITUDE! There are dress codes in every town and city so why is KC different??!!
