As I was leaving Harry’s Bar and Tables on Saturday night, I spotted Chaukka Shaw (left) and Precious Campbell. They stood just outside the door, smoking under a tall blue umbrella the bar set out because of the rain.
Chaukka and Precious met when they attended the House of Heavilin beauty school in Grandview. Precious now studies business at Maple Woods, and Chaukka wants to be a counselor at Hope House.
Precious, 23, sported a black sheer jacket studded with rhinestones. I loved her shoes, which she said she got on eBay for $30. “I’m up for good deals,” she said.
She bought her jacket in Hollywood on Sunset Boulevard. “In Hollywood, you can look like a freak and no one cares,” she said. She added that she used to be into the goth scene and frequented Hot Topic.
Chaukka, 28, said that she was also an ex-goth while she attended Paseo High School, where she was a costume and makeup major. She’s the mother of two kids, and said that her style is “something a mother would wear-slash-goth.”
“A lot of women with children think they have to dress frumpy,” she said. “They’re not old; don’t dress like that.” She hates it when moms wear white. “You know it gets messy,” she said. Another fashion peeve is when women in their late 20s or 30s have kids, lose weight and wear children’s clothes – “they buy Mary Kate and Ashley clothes.”
“They’re so tiny they look like child adults. Show some cleavage or something. Don’t flaunt too much at once or you look slutty,” she said.
