I flipped on the news last night and the top story was a woman shot while sitting on her front porch. I thought my DVR had screwed up. I hit the "live" button. Nothing happened. It was another attack on someone on their front porch, a familiar trend in this killer city.
Last night's was a drive-by shooting at 54th and Highland. The woman wasn't seriously injured. She was lucky. Others haven't been so fortunate.
Lahoma Benton stepped onto her cousin's porch at 27th and Monroe Friday night to smoke a cigarette. Two men shot the 59-year-old in a seemingly random act of violence.
On August 27, two men gunned down 18-year-old Jeremy Meredith and a 24-year-old pregnant woman on a neighbor's porch at Ninth and Indiana. The woman was four months into her pregnancy.

THAT'S IT! Thanks, Justin.
Did you guys ever win any awards for those pieces? That was some of the most fascinating and spot on reporting I have ever read. The stories were so enthralling it is only afterwards that one contemplates that the reporter knowingly went into the bowels of gang territory to interview folks about gangs. Pitch reporting at its finest.
These might be the stories you're thinking of:

There's always a chance of a follow up.
Let me first apologize for not recalling specific details of Pitch story history, but I am betting someone will remember this
It was quite a while ago that The Pitch ran several stories about KC gangs. The reporter actually went to the neighborhoods, talked to the folks, and provided a general map of the gangsta territory. I think that is what spawned Boss Bitch and something about a Tone Def or something like that if I am not mistaken. I seem to remember some sort of prediction of the power vacuum that would result when they pinched the head gangsta. It also seems that this guy did get pinched and the predicted violence did indeed occur.
Anyway, is there any thought about whether this latest porch violence is still residual from the original gangsta being taken off the streets? Any chance of a follow up story?
