Crack Pitch clubs editor Berry Anderson snapped this photo at Eighth Street and Walnut. She also spied another sign on Southwest Boulevard across from Manny's.

Let's get this straight. The Kansas City Star's answer to falling stock prices, declining circulation and company-wide layoffs isn't providing better coverage of Kansas City -- it's bribing readers with a $25,000 grand prize?

Here's a list of folks who are now eligible for the contest (and its recession-ready idea of "riches") thanks to the Star 's layoffs:

Stan Austin, senior online editor
Tony Balandran, assistant city editor
Melodee Hall Blobaum, reporter
Mike Casey, reporter

Hearne Christopher Jr., columnist
Greg Clark, Independence bureau chief
Charles Coulter, editorial board member

L. Eric Craven, graphic artist
Angela Curry, At Your Service columnist
Monroe Dodd, former managing editor
Jeffrey Flanagan, sports writer
Kevin Hoffman, reporter
Allen Holder, travel editor
Paul Horsley, music and dance critic

Lee Judge, cartoonist
Julius Karash, health care reporter

David Knopf, reporter and editor

Victoria Sizemore Long, business desk

Bob Lynn, weekend editor, city desk

Jeanne Meyer, managing editor/business and features
John Mutrux, photographer

David Olson, business wire editor

Howard Richman, Kansas State sports beat writer

Steve Rock, reporter

Laura Scott, editorial page
John Shultz, reporter
Loren Stanton, Blue Valley-Leawood neighborhood news editor
Kit Wagar, Missouri statehouse reporter

Les Weatherford, copy editor

Keith G, you want to know the difference? Strip clubs MAKE money and can thus give it away. When was the last time you saw strippers being laid off?

The death of the watchdog media, or rather its emergence into a Democratic mouth piece is a shame. A shame only surpassed by the erosion of reporting to some sort of Google-blog-incestuous mass where unique thought is shelved for sensationalist regurgitation and anonymous sources. Profiteering was deemed much cheaper than training a generation of watchdogsespecially when those watchdogs might one day look inwards at their creator. Unfortunately, the plan does not appear to be sustainable and The Star is a perfect example.

Dude: Your first three lines sounded like they were ripped out of Mark Zieman's Sunday column.

Baxter: You're right about Angela Curry. I missed the note at the end of her last column. But you missed the point of the post, which Trevor nailed. Do you really believe this promotion will save the paper or add any readers?

Trevor: It's like there's a psychic link between us.

Keith: I do pray the Star survives. The city is better served with a strong newspaper.

I think by Hearne Christopher Jr.'s name, "columnist" should be in quotes.

The paper, as it were, will be online only within the next two years. Their shiny glass building will be for rent.

How is this different than strip club and Hurts Rent-a-Bimbo ads? Well, someone will walk away with $25k thanks to the Star.

Without the Star, the Pitch would lose its ability to pat itself on the back. So, were I the Pitch, I'd pray every night for the Star's success.

Now, about those local movie reviews...

baxter, my guess is that Justin (and for that matter, me) don't understand the part about giving away the equivalent of 1-2 reporter's salaries (maybe more...reporters are cheap) while reducing paper quality by laying off the reporters. What with the recent hard times for print media, it seems silly to reduce the quality of the paper and trying to shove that under the carpet with a lame ass marketing bribe tactic.

Perhaps you can explain to us the business model of quality reduction for all through bribes to a random single person?

And JustTheFactsMaam, you have the flaming down (as usual), but disgrace your name by yet again failing to include any facts. Perhaps you should consider a change to your name. Might I suggest, JustMyOpinionBitches?

Justin, what part of business and promotions do you not understand? For god's sake, you work at a paper yourself and surely you comprehend the basics of advertising revenue. Maybe not. Newspapers have run contests for the entire history of their existence, you numbnuts. The Journal-Post gave away a whole house with a long-running contest, in the heyday of printed papers. By the way, Angela Curry retired, as you were too lazy to read her last column.

The Star is still the best thing going for local news and provides an important check on local government. There are more readers than ever for news. If readers would accept a small online fee for access, I think the Star could make a go of it. They better figure something out soon, because using their current business model, the last person leaving the building can turn the lights off for good.

Sounds kind of like Obama's plan, take money from those who work and give it to those that don't. In the case of the Socialist Star they take salaries from inept writers and give it to idiot readers.

The Star is an entertainment rag, not a newspaper. It's a forum for the leftist wannabe's to spew thier socialist crap with a bit of gossip sprinkled in about people who actually have reached some level of success in this very small little pond called KC.
