Devyn Simone is a Kansas City native, a graduate of Notre Dame de Sion High School, and a former host of KPRS 103.3's popular morning show Generation Rap. Now she's part of the cast of MTV's The Real World: Brooklyn, which premieres tonight (she's third from the right). Check out our Q and A after the jump.
The Pitch: You're calling from New York. Is that where you live now?
DS: Yes! I came back to Kansas City for Christmas but I live in New York now and I work up here as the public relations director for a fashion label called Jovani. They do everything from couture gowns -- Kim Kardashian and Carrie Underwood have worn our stuff -- to prom dresses. I promote for them and wear their stuff and head their PR department.
The Pitch: How long have you done that?
DS: I've been here since September. I was crowned Miss Missouri Teen 2004 in one of their gowns, actually, so I've loved their stuff forever. I'm really excited to be working here. (She was also Miss American Teen 2005.)
The Pitch: How did you end up on The Real World?
DS: It's kind of just a funny story. Ironically enough, I met some Real World-ers about a year ago doing a New Year's party. We'd flown them to Tampa, Florida, where I went to college (the University of South Florida), to host a party. I met them and thought, if they can do it, eh, why not give it a shot? Who knows, who cares? So I sent in a video online, and it's about a six-month process, because hundreds of thousands of people audition, and they pick seven. I started the audition in January, and on May 13th I got the call that I made it. That's, of course, after every two weeks having something that I needed to do for them.
The Pitch: Have you watched every season?
DS: Not every season, but I have watched a lot of seasons and have had the great opportunity of meeting a lot of past Real World cast members. The last season I really really remember watching was, like, New Orleans? But I watched off and on for years. I was addicted to the Hollywood season because that was on during my casting process, so you're watching, trying to gather what life could be like, even though you could never imagine what it's really going to be like. They actually had a special on yesterday, and it's surreal to watch all these people talk about what an experience it is, and think, wow, I'm a part of that. Especially at such a pivotal time, the 21st season, they're really doing a lot for that.
The Pitch: How did Brooklyn respond to you? Did they embrace you or heckle you?
DS: You know, it's definitely a mix. Overall, we were definitely secluded in our house. We lived on the water. It was absolutely beautiful. All the immediate neighbors were very supportive. One of our neighbors in the building would cook dinner for us. Very supportive. And then you have people -- like the hipsters, so to speak in Williamsburg -- that don't like people on their territory. What always kills me is that they would hate the cameras, but they would run right up to them and say something. If you don't like the attention, like, why not just bow out gracefully, walk away, it's not a big deal? They say they hate what we're doing but really, they want to be a part. It sucks but overall, people in New York were very receptive and we made a lot of friends here that were very supportive.
The Pitch: Was there a lot of drama?
DS: Oh, of course. I'll tell you this: There was so much drama that we ended filming two weeks early. They had all that they needed.
The Pitch: Are you in the middle of any of it?
DS: Well, there's certain things you just cannot dodge or duck, but overall I tried not to be in the middle of it, just for the simple fact that I don't like drama. I really don't. I know a lot of people say that but I really, really don't. I would try to avoid it, I mean, I got a job here at Jovani during the show so that was kind of an escape for me. But there were definitely points in time that I got pulled in or sucked in. They filmed, like, 3,000 hours and they can only show 13 hours of it, less than that.
The Pitch: Did they do you dirty with the editing?
DS: Oh, trust me. I've seen the first couple episodes, and they definitely take some things out of context, you know, but overall it's pretty accurate. They can definitely emphasize certain things, make it seem more dramatic. But a good thing for the fans is , now we have a site called Realworlddailies.com, where they can see unedited footage of things that didn't make it, which I think will really add to character development. You'll see what the person is like when you have that, because it's not so much the story, but about the person. They add new videos everyday.
The Pitch: Will there be a villain that comes out of this season?
DS: Oh, definitely. Most definitely. (Laughs) It will be revealed - because what you do in the dark will come to light. It will definitely come to light. I'm sure if you watch the trailer enough, you can probably gather who it's gonna be.
The Pitch: Do you get back here often?
DS: I was back for the holidays briefly. My family always complains that I'm not there long enough. We're doing a lot of promotion for the show right now. Just really busy, promoting that, trying to promote my career, essentially I did this to pursue my acting and singing and even rapping career. I ended up rapping on the show, which is hilarious. Straight-up writing down lyrics and performing at a club in New York, rapping. But Kansas City is home, always will be home. My family's there, my dogs are there.
The Pitch: Did you finish college?
DS: I did not. I was halfway through with theater and only a sophomore in music because I added on a major a year late. I took a break from that to come here and do this and now I have an excellent job, my career has kind of taken off, so I'm going to explore this right now.
The Pitch: It's like you got drafted, but into the entertainment world.
DS: Yeah! That's a good way to put it. It's like I got drafted. Who would turn that down? The pros say they want you, you're not going to be like, eh, let me finish. I told my parents that hopefully I won't have to. I mean, I think it's really important and I'd love to have a degree at some point, but just, in my nature, I'd so much rather be in my art than studying it. If you've got a spot, you better get in it and keep going.
The Pitch: You have a saying.
DS: I do, I do. (laughs) You have a better chance of getting into heaven than getting into Devyn. It'll be true till the day I die. I never even thought that that would take off. That slogan, someone already wrote on my wall that it's "gangster." I don't really know. I think that's a good thing to be known for. It could be worse. It's disarming, because it doesn't seem too evil or whatever, but it's basically saying hey, look, if you're coming to me for this, it's not going to happen, just so we're on the same page. But it's not preachy -- it's funny. Anyone with the name Devyn, feel free to drop that one one day.
The Real World: Brooklyn, premieres Wednesday night at 9 on MTV. We'll be rooting for you, Devyn.

Did she really date Tampa Bay Bucs QB Josh Freeman?
Please,- also my mate that dated her said she liked her drugs. But he wasn't giving her too much cash- so she must have been seeing a few other dudes. Prob how he got the STD. Oh, and for all the one's out there- the sugardaddy's that don't care and willl wear protection- she does the threesomes, the foursomes. all that! Just give her a little more cash. He finally got rid of her when she wanted him to pay for her car repairs. funny, she she does a lot of 'work'.. way too sad really- but she seems like such a nasty person; trying to get cash from my friend- AFTER he had already paid her what she wanted, anyway, she doesn't seem like a good person.. so I just say a prayer for someone to help her. Cuz I don't think i could.
UM- SHE was NOT crowned Miss teen- Please, show me. unless it was some low brow pageant- like an unknown pageant. I know it was not a nationally 'recognized' pageant. Wow- liar. And please, she is working as a prostitute in Los Angeles. See her profile Dessert4life on sugardaddy.com. So, you can pay to play if you like- but my mate got a little somethin somethin from her- so take some precautions Oh yeah, and after he didn't want to see her no more she tried to get a bunch of cash from him. So young to look and be so 'worn out'a
