Lawyer for missing woman's spouse can shut up now

Posted by David Martin on Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 3:26 PM

Crime suspects are entitled to a vigorous defense. But every once in a while, a defense lawyer takes the concept of innocent until proven guilty and acts like a real asshat.

Renee Pernice, a 35-year-old Northland wife and mother, has been missing since January 2. Since her disappearance, it seems fair to say that her husband, Shon, has acted like a man with something to hide. He has not commented publicly. And he has shown a reluctance to speak with police.

Shon Pernice's lawyer, Kevin Baldwin (pictured), said last week that he had instructed his client to stay silent. Baldwin might have added, "My client maintains his innocence," and ended it there.

Instead, the lawyer has felt compelled to riff on a variety subjects.

Baldwin initially told reporters that Pernice wasn't talking to police because, as The Kansas City Star put it, "Pernice feels he is being blamed for her disappearance."

Well, yeah. Because when a young mother goes missing, the husband she sought to divorce in 2005 is generally a good place to start an investigation. (The divorce case was dismissed in 2007.) Or maybe the cops should just wait for someone to come in and share what he or she knows about Pernice's disappearance.

Baldwin then went on to present his aggrieved client's version of events as fact. Baldwin told The Star that Renee Pernice had told her husband she was leaving at 9 a.m. on the morning she disappeared. Baldwin said his client talked to police the following day and searched the neighborhoods surrounding their home.

Baldwin then went on to describe the rough patch the Pernices experienced after Shon returned home from a tour in Iraq. (A guardsman, Pernice works as a fire fighter in Independence.) "They discussed a possible seperation, but things had gone well during the holidays, and Baldwin said his client assumed everything was fine," a January 7 Star story stated.

Christ. As if Renee Pernice's loved ones aren't in enough misery, they have to read in the newspaper that Kevin Baldwin, action lawyer, has deemed the marriage to be hunky-dory.

The police executed a search warrant on the Pernice home on January 8. Always the expert, Baldwin objected to the form the search took, saying it was, in The Star's telling, "unnecessary that a group of heavily armed tactical officers used an explosive device before entering the house."

You're right, Kev, the muscle and firepower were entirely unnecessary, given that your client is, by your admission, a war veteran with a traumatic brain injury. The police said they removed a defective disabled hand grenade from the house.

I left two messages with Baldwin in the hopes of discussing his representation of
Shon Pernice. An office secretary said he was in trial and would not be able to return calls.

Anyone with information about Renee Pernice's disappearance is asked to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477.

UPDATE: I spoke to Capt. Rich Lockhart of the Kansas City police department early Wednesday afternoon. He described the grenade removed from the Pernice home as "disabled." Lockhart said the bottom of the device had been hollowed out and said it was comparable to something that could be found at a military-surplus store.

Is this the man (Sean Pernice) that took his children (boys?)out camping in January 2009? the same month his wife missing? and she's been missing 1 1/2 years!

It just sounded strange (in the news around that time January 2009) why a father would take his kids camping, (in his vehicle) in January in the snow. Wife reported missing, that same month, and decide to move himself & his kids away from their home, and
NOT be a suspect.

Is this Sean Pernice that man? If it's not, let me know.

The husband is guilty as hell. I know for a fact if I turned up missing the last thing my husband would do is cold-heartly abandon by dog. The bright side is he will get caught, he hired a moron for a lawyer

Ahhh, the watchdog press and their guilt by speciousness. I ask you, fair members that subscribe to trail-by-blog, why do we even need the judicial branch of government when it can so easily be disregarded because it is asshat?

Does anyone know if the laywer, aka-Asshat, was present with Shon at the prayer vigil? Just wondering? I guess I missed a golden opportunity to punch a bitch in the face and get away with it.

To Deanna's point, here's a link to a story in The Examiner in which a PD spokesman refers to the grenade in question as not live and a souvenir with the bottom already drilled out.

The word "defective" appeared in a Star story.

I have researched several cases for my blog Mothers are Vanishing and I will tell you that Shon Pernice is following the playbook. I'm not asserting that he is guilty, however, signs are pointing in that direction.

Consider this, the most dangerous time of a woman's life is when she is ending a relationship and she must take safety precautions when doing so. Please, read the stories about missing women and see just how many follow the same pattern.

Relationship going bad.
Filings for divorce.
Husband controlling or abusive.
Wife goes missing.

This definitely isn't the first time the husband of a missing wife has lawyered up! Look at Drew Peterson and what a gold mine he and his idiot lawyer have found.

The number one reason for death in pregnant women is not from disease or complications....it's murder! Sometimes the strain of children and subsequent child support plays a huge role in the way these psychopaths react.

This scenario is played out time and time again. If you are looking closely you will see it.

"...removed a defective hand grenade from the house".

Actually, the grenade was hollowed out and deactivated, not just defective. It sounds like you're trying to make this man guilty because you need someone to blame this on. I'm not saying he's guilty or innocent, just that by putting mistruths into your story, you're sending an inaccurate message about this man, and you're making yourself look dumb.

I am confused . . . (not hard to do I admit) but you say the lawyer can "SHUT UP NOW" however, you seem p*ssd he didn't talk to you. That's pretty funny!

Has anyone actually seen these lawyers making any statements on the news? I keep hearing that Shawn Pernice and his lawyers refuse to speak to any of the TV news guys.

What are they hiding? Kind of unusual for ANY lawyer NOT to be on TV!!!

Outside of the KC star, are they talking to anyone?
