I visited the Power & Light District Saturday afternoon for a fundraiser to assist Big Brothers, Big Sisters. I have to say, it seemed like a good thing. While I applaud the fund-raising effort, Cordish's latest decision has left me more confused about the district then before.
The event had a good turnout, according to McFadden's general manager Brian Phillips. He told me that roughly 250 to 300 people had signed up about an hour into the play, which means a nice donation. Teams played nine holes in P&L bars, which had set up mini golf putting greens so you could get sloshed while supporting the kids. After watching some drunks putting uphill inside McFadden's, I decided this was the second best activity I'd ever seen to do while drunk, and hoped that some of the bars would keep the course around. The fund-raiser was announced as the Inaugural P&L Winter Classic, so I hope to see it again next year.
The reason I'm torn and confused is Cordish has established this message about who is welcome in the district: Minorities, Christians and children's balloon entertainers are terrifying. People armed with clubs and drinking with 10 hours til last call ... no problem there.
