Today's the National Day of Service, designated by Congress in 1994 so that Americans do more to celebrate Martin Luther King Day than sit on the couch, scratch themselves and watch Oprah.

It's not too late to volunteer. Check out these events:

  • Hugh Merrill, a Kansas City Art Institute professor, invites people to Chameleon Arts (2025 Tracy Avenue) to draw portraits of Barack and Michelle Obama for a later exhibition at the art institute. This event starts at noon.

  • Big Brothers, Big Sisters is having a panel discussion: "Big Hopes, Big Shoes: How can we empower Kansas City youth to fulfill their vision of the future?" The panel includes David Smith of Boys & Girls Clubs; Micheal Lawrence of Big Brothers, Big Sisters; Steve Green of Kauffman Scholars; Lisa Adkins of YouthFriends; City Councilwoman Beth Gottstein; and

Airick West of the Kansas City School Board. It's at the Robert J. Mohart Building (3200 Wayne) from 2 to 3 p.m.

  • Prairie Park Clean-Up in Lawrence: Bring the kids to the east entrance of Prairie Park (2811 Kensington Road) from 2 to 3 p.m. Trash bags, plastic gloves, hand sanitizer and hand-washing water will be provided.
  • The Monday night bible study class at Centennial UMC feeds the hungry with a spaghetti dinner tonight at reStart, Inc. (918 E. 9th Street) from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m.

  • Help Harvesters (3801 Topping Avenue) sort and repackage food for pantries from noon to 1 p.m.
  • Teach kids how to use computers at the AT&T/Ford Computer Lab (148 N. Topping Avenue) from 4 to 7 p.m.

  • Yes We CAN food drive: Obama volunteers in the Waldo/Brookside/Plaza area are working with Harvesters to help feed the hungry in the greater Kansas City area. Contact George Mayer at gmayer@everestkc.net to sign up for activities and that will culminate in the delivery of donated food and money to the Harvesters facility today.
