OK, it's not that complicated, but it's complex enough that even Deffenbaugh Industries can't give a definitive answer.
After media outlets started reporting the good news about chucking virtually any plastic bottle into curbside containers, Deffenbaugh quickly let us know the error of our enthusiasm. The blanket statement about accepting plastics #1 through #7 comes with more than a few caveats.
"Simply because Deffenbaugh can accept #1 through #7 plastics does not begin to suggest that all plastics may be taken," the company said in a statement last week. "Additionally, it should be pointed out that it is impossible to have an all-inclusive list of acceptable plastic items or unacceptable plastic items."
But here's a list of some vague guidelines, courtesy of Deffenbaugh:
Some of the unacceptable items will include, but may not necessarily be limited to:
• Motor oil bottles
• Pesticide and/or herbicide bottles
• Miscellaneous automotive product bottles (brake fluid, transmission fluid, windshield washer fluid, etc.)
• Plastic bags
• Plastic toys
• Expanded #6 polystyrene material (including 'peanuts' and packaging blocks/sheets)
• PVC pipe
• Plastic sheet material
This new program is contemplated to allow for previously unacceptable plastic to become recyclable. Some of these will include:
• #2 HDPE margarine and yogurt containers
• #5 Polypropylene food containers (ketchup, chocolate syrup, etc.)
• #6 rigid polystyrene food containers
• Deli or salad bar rigid "clamshell" plastics
And that's just for curbside collection. Check out Bridging the Gap's Web site to find out what's now acceptable at the drop-off locations.
