Kansas City and New Orleans have a lot in common. Both have vibrant, musical histories. Both have historic party districts. Both have neglected neighborhoods in ruins -- [Whoops, off topic! -NP] And like the folks in N'awlins, Kansas Citians loooove Mardi Gras. Nobody could party to the extent that the Big Easy does, of course, but we still know how to laissez les bon temps roulez. After the jump, a roundup of events we've heard about leading up to Fat Tuesday.

They're serving up a brunch buffet with an amazing-sounding array of
traditional Cajun dishes for $12.95. Family-friendly with face painting for
kids. The Grand Marquis play at 1 p.m. No cover.
homegrown costumes, brass bands, floats and chaos, is the annual 18th
Street Mardi Gras parade. It starts at YJ's, 18th and Wyandotte, and
goes from 6 to 9 p.m. Look out for floats by the Krewe de Zoo,
the Krewe de Maximon, the Top 'o' the Bottoms Social Aid and Pleasure
Club, and the Secret Society of Sirens. Birdies panty shop plans to
place beguiling ladies behind the shop's windows, like in Amsterdam
(but no touchy!). When the parade starts, it will tromp east on 18th
Street, ending at the Jazz District, 18th and Vine, culminating in an
insane street party. Or so we presume.
Gras Pub Crawl: It starts at 7 p.m. and goes to midnight. Buses run
from Paddy O'Quigley's at 11851 Roe in Leawood, to Tanner's on 143rd,
to Tanner's at 119th, to Johnny's, to 810 Zone and back to Paddy
O'Quigley's. Wristbands for the bus rides are $5 in advance (available
at any of the Paddy O'Quigley's locations) and $10 the day of. Costumes
encouraged, of course.
hosting their Pardi Gras Pub Crawl starting at 6 p.m. The first bus
leaves at 7 p.m. and buses leave every 15 minutes thereafter. Scheduled
stops are at Charlie Hooper's, Tower Tavern, the Granfalloon and
Lew's Grill and Bar. The last bus is at 1:30 a.m. Tickets are $5 in
advance at any of the participating bars, or $10 the day of.
