I didn't watch the Academy Awards last night. OK, I did for like five minutes (too long). I tuned in just in time to see the "commie, homo-loving sons-of-guns" hand Sean Penn the best actor award for his role in Milk. I was too busy texting "bullshit" to Peter Rugg -- I mean, did you see The Wrestler? -- to listen to Penn's acceptance speech. I should have. He gave a shout-out to America's most hated family, the members of Fred Phelps' Westboro Baptist Church, who were picketing the Academy Awards.
"For those who saw the signs
of hatred as our cars drove in tonight, I think that it is a good time
for those who voted for the ban against gay marriage to sit and reflect
and anticipate their great shame and the shame in their grandchildren's
eyes if they continue that way of support," Penn said as he accepted the award. "We've got to have equal
rights for everyone."
None of the stories about the show mentioned the Phelps family by name. Neither did Penn. But he kept talking about them in the post show Q&A.
What would you say to those people who were holding those [anti-gay protest] signs tonight?Sean, you're taking the Phelps family way, way too seriously. But I know they love the attention.I'd
tell them to turn in their hate card and find their better self, you
know. I think that these are largely taught limitations and ignorances
... and it's very sad in a way, because it's a demonstration of such
emotional cowardice to be so afraid to be extending the same rights to
a fellow man as you would want for yourself. I would ask them not to
tempt those of us who see something more deeply than they are looking
at it, as angry as they tend to be in a void.
One of the signs of the protesters out there said, "Heath [Ledger] is in hell." Can you comment on that?
Idon't know what that means ... I think if we get used to dismissing these
kinds of comments, rather than commenting on them, we'll be better off.
It's meaningless jibberish. We've got to focus on people who are clear
enough about what they mean.

Quote - "The question remains, would God himself or angels punish the United States, for supporting Gay marriage?"
I believe He would and already is. Just look at what is happening to our country and it's total lack of a TRUE moral center. And look deeper at the world in general and not be worried about judgement?
The Christian belief is that God is above all other Gods. Christians believe that God allows marriage between a man and a woman, but not a man and a man, a woman and a woman, or any human and an animal. Christians believe in civil rights for all people, even gays. Christ teaches us to love our neighbors and enemies. Christians also believe that God can personally intervene through angels or Himself, if He disapproves of a nations or persons actions. Christians should not hate Gays or physically or verbally attack them. The question remains, would God himself or angels punish the United States, for supporting Gay marriage? The Christian worldview is not against Gays themselves, but rather, avoiding punishment from God.
I figured that Penn was talking about Fred Phelps. But here's the kicker, folks: Fred Phelps and his band of inbreds are despised by conservatives and liberals. You got that? He does not in any way represent the conservative Christian viewpoint on anything.
Furthermore: Sean Penn can't lecture anyone about intolerance and hate. He spews that all the time - except when he's cheating on his wife or girlfriend. Or beating up his wife or girlfriend.
Hmmm...first of all Steve your comment is grammatically messed up, but most of us know what you meant so I'll move on to my main point. You appear to justify your hate toward homosexuality based on being a Christian, not a coward. When it comes to this issue, what's the difference?
Assuming that the bible is the inspired word of god, assuming that the bible we have today is the same bible that existed 2000 years ago, assuming that Christianity has somehow properly interpreted the bible on this matter, what gives Christians the right to call them perverts and reject the idea that they have the same basic rights as heterosexuals?
I don't know...it sounds a bit cowardly to me.
Well, Steve, nobody forced you to watch the Oscars. There is a nifty little button on your remote; it's called the POWER button! You can turn the channel and watch the latest rerun of Andy Griffith, if you so choose.
Being a gay person in CA who is directly affected by Prop HATE, I enjoyed Penn's remarks last night, and thought they hit the nail right on the head.
Sean Penn is a fool. He insults the people of California for approving Prop 8, he insults people who believe homosexuality - NOT because they are cowards but because they are Christians and he insults himself and his family by playing a ridiculous part of a pervert like Harvey Milk.
Take your liberal politics and go home, Mr. Penn! We don't care what you think!
