Last weekend's protest: Kansas City Tea Party

They came with signs commanding death to socialism and placards bearing slogans like "Honk if you think your neighbors' mortgage is their own damn fault!" The Kansas City Tea Party was one of dozens of protests around the country this week that took a stand against a federal stimulus package that, opponents say, undermines personal responsibility and shackles future generations with staggering debt. At the rally near the Plaza on Saturday morning, a bundled up young couple said they work hard to make ends meet and others should be required to do the same.

Name: Ben and Andrea Jones

Braved the snow because: "We're mad and there are only a few ways to peacefully say that we're mad," Andrea said. "And standing with others is a really great way to get that message across."

Why they're pissed: "We work hard for our money," Ben said. "We don't need the government giving out what we're earning to people who aren't willing to go get it. Too many people are abusing the system."

If I can do it, so can you: Sure, the economy is soft but the Joneses said they don't understand why they should be picking up the tab for their neighbors' bad decisions. "It's like, we're a family on a single income that makes it," Ben said. "We own a house. We don't have any debt. It's like, I don't need to pay for somebody else's mistakes or their mortgage or their healthcare. It's important to go out and do it yourself."

Bailouts are bullshit: "No business is too big to fail," Ben said, referencing the argument that allowing certain industries to falter would put too many people out of work. "If they're using bad business practice and gotten themselves in a bad situation, they need to have the ability to get out from underneath that or go under." Andrea agreed that bailouts turn capitalism on its head. "If they take away the ability to fail, they take away success, too," she added.

Worried about their kids' bank accounts: "We've got a three-year-old and a 20-month-old and one on the way," Andrea said. "And those three kids -- and their kids -- are going to be paying for this crap, this staggering amount of debt that he, Obama, is wracking up for us. We'll be paying that back for generations."

How can someone with a mohawk still look like such a wuss?

Maybe they shouldn't be having so many kids if they're having trouble making ends meet.

Hey Couples Friend!! I don't truly care about the mohawk. Don't take things so seriously in regards to that. If you're friends with the couple, then you have obviously skewed beliefs, too. Get YOUR head out of YOUR ass, and let Obama do his damn job. I mean, give the guy a break. You need to realize what kind of shit he was left with. No matter what anyone believes...he is our President and you need to respect him. Give the man some space and time to the job that he was elected to do. Oh yeah...and the election was NOT even a close one!!!! Man, Republicans are whiny!

Even Steven / PJ ....WOW totally missing the point by making your response "Being a Republican with a mohawk is like being a pro-rape feminist" -about someones appearance rather than the issue. I'd like to see things from your point of view but I can't seem to get my head that far up my ass.

Even Stevens, Don't judge someone based on their looks. What they choose to do with their hair, or any other part of their body, has nothing to do with their thoughts or ideas. Geez, I thought we were past the stereotyping, but I guess I was wrong.

People voted for change, and Obama is trying very hard, maybe too hard. He's only been in office less than two months. It takes time to fix a mess such as the one Bush left him. He may be going about things in the wrong way, but if we all have to sit and listen to the Republicans whine for the next 4-8 years, then good grief!! Get over it! Everyone is entitle to their opinions, but why crab about something you can't do anything about? Seriously people!! Also...I love the mohawk comment from above! So true!

Yeah, but Obama is trying to fix Bush's bullshit. You make some valid points though. I don't want my kids to pay for things either. Big businesses should be held responsible for their stupidity, and people shouldn't get bailed out of mortgage faults because of dumb decisions. But Bush sucked!! Please don't bitch for 4 years, just deal with it, as there is really nothing you can do about it. I am not happy with everything either, but there's not much I can do. My hubby and I have been trying to sell our house because we need a bigger one, due to a growing fam. We are responsible people with good jobs, no debt. But yet we are screwed!! I don't blame Obama though...he got stuck in the middle of the mess Bush left him. Give the poor guy some slack!

Put teeth into your protest. Ask your House Representative to co-sponsor H.R. 450 - The Enumerated Powers Act. It's purpose: "To require Congress to specify the source of authority under the United States Constitution for the enactment of laws, and for other purposes". See it at http://www.thomas.gov

You can email your Rep. at https://writerep.house.gov/wri...

Maybe they're libertarians.

The one thing I can't get my head around is this: how does borrowing and spending cure an economic collapse that was brought on by excessive borrowing and spending? That's like binging on Twinkies to get rid of our excess holiday pounds.

other bloggers were reporting about 200 people showed up. i'd say it was less than that, but definitely in the triple digits.
