We're finally getting details on the homicide in Independence's Benton Park early Saturday morning. Court records accuse 19-year-old Mauricio Lopez of killing Jeffrey P. Johnson. Lopez allegedly shot Johnson at 2:42 a.m. during an argument over a man calling and text messaging his ex-girlfriend.
Court records say John Fuiamono wanted to fight Eddie Rodriguez, his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend. Fuiamono brought back up -- Lopez, Edgar A. Herrera, Nicolas O'Leary, David Miller, Rollie Hanks and a juvenile. Hanks drove the crew in his Chevrolet Carpice to Benton Park. They met Rodriguez, Johnson and Anthony Mills.
Lopez would later tell detectives that Miller handed him the revolver and told him to shoot Johnson as he was running away. Lopez allegedly admitted shooting Johnson, telling detectives that he shot Johnson with a "Felony 44."
In an interview with detectives, Herrera would admit to shooting Mills in the right buttocks with a .22.
After the shooting, Lopez, Herrera and O'Leary allegedly returned to the car in which Miller wiped the guns with his Indianapolis Colts jersey and then threw them out of the car.
Independence Police arrived at Benton Park four minutes after the shooting. Officers found Johnson with multiple gunshot wounds to the upper torso lying in the "fetal position" on Crane. He wasn't responding, so he was taken to Centerpoint Hospital where he died. The Jackson County Medical Examiner ruled Johnson's death a homicide.
Today, Jackson County prosecutors charged Lopez with second-degree murder and armed criminal action. They also charged Herrera with first-degree assault and armed criminal action.

I used to babysit Jeff's cousin. I am reading all of this nonsense and all I can think about is that little four year old (jeff's little cousin) and how her mama is supposed to explain to her why Jeff isn't here anymore. I grew up in independence. I moved away about 17 years ago and am now thanking God that I am not raising my kids there. Jeff was shot in the back. Four times. He was running away. What kind of life would a person have grown up in that shooting someone in the back is ok. That's not self-defense. That's nonsense. Jeff was only 19 years old. He never had the chance to live his life. His mom will never go to his wedding. Why would someone take that away from another for some nonsense. My heart is breaking for jeff's family and for the mothers of these guys who arefacing jailtime for some senseless actions. These moms, one who will never have the opportunity to watch her son grow up, and the others who have to wonder what they did so wrong that their sons would take the life of another. It's not like he just got his ass kicked and he will get over it. He is DEAD. period. No more. His life is over and there is no good reason for it. My heart aches. It's been tough reading all of these threads, with the hate and venom spewing out. I was fortunate to be John and Mark's teacher for a year, and they were great kids. When I heard the story, I was speechless... I hope everyone involved can find their own way of dealing with the situation, without hate and violence!!! I have a personal experience with John Fuimaono and David Miller. It was a matter of time before they killed someone. I'm surprised it took this long. They think they are some hard gang from LA instead of white/samoan Independence trash that they are. I could have very easily been killed by them, I guess I got luckier than the guy they killed and they decided it wasn't my night to die, too many witnesses probably. My situation ended up being beaten with weapons, broken bones with multiple surgeries, time off work, etc. All over these grown men messing with little kids. Trust me no one is safe from these monsters, not women, kids, old people. NOBODY. They deserve to be behind bars and I can't believe John wasn't charged with a more serious crime considering this was his fight! I don't know the others charged except I do think Marc was probably blind to what was going on but he never should have involved himself with such trash in the first place.
