Yesterday, making the rounds -- a Crap
Archivist must -- I came across a rich trove of local history: the
photo archives of John Switzer, a former Star photographer and
reporter.
Switzer's collection is priced to move. I mean that
literally -- he's selling his Prairie Village home and moving to a
smaller place.
I made off with six 8X10s at two bucks a pop,
and there were stacks of interesting shots remaining when I left.
(The sale runs through Saturday at 4910 W. 69th Terrace in Prairie Village.) Switzer's collection includes news shots, impressive urban
landscapes, some arty experiments, and lots of random life captured
with a practiced eye.
Here's the construction of I-70.
More great shots after the jump.
Switzer is also unloading,
among other things, furniture, an organ, a gorgeous framed map of
Scotland and many vintage magazines about flying and Britain. The cool young lady from Absolute
Estate Sales told me that he's even selling slides and
negatives, including many from crime scenes.
Here's a bird's-eye view of a crash.

Why is there an arrow pointing at what looks to be the lone black dude in the Star office?
@guz - My apologies--I stand corrected. Google Maps (Alan, you knew I'd go there) has some holes in its coverage, but this is the facility in the background of the photo, and it is indeed at the NW corner of SW Blvd and Rainbow (or just south of I-35). You da man! a href="http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF...">Google Maps Photo
That's a shot of I-35 looking East. That's 7th street Trfy in the background.

This is beautiful stuff. Definitely not the crap you usually share with us.
The early days of Prairie Village fascinate me. I have a friend whose grandfather bought a house on 74th near Mission Road brand new. He showed me a few pictures, and I remember being struck at how desolate everything looked. Now, the big trees next to the sidewalks are all mature, three generations of people have added onto/remodeled their homes...it's quite a difference.
@guz - I think that's I-70 in KCK looking east toward downtown. My first thought is that the picture is taken from a bluff near City Park (which is located near the 38th Street exit).
