Marc Conklin, the former chief administrative officer for the Kansas City, Kansas, Board of Public Utilities, committed suicide at his home last night. The Kansas City Kansan reported the story first early this morning. A BPU spokesman confirmed the story to me this morning. In October, a Wyandotte County grand jury indicted Conklin and Rodney L. Turner, a 68-year-old lawyer who contracted with the utility, on charges of stealing more than $400,000 from the water and electric company.
BPU General Manager Don Gray issued this statement.
We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Marc Conklin and extend our sympathy and condolences to his family. He was a valued colleague within the BPU family and friend to many within the community, and he will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends during this difficult time.A spokesman with the Kansas City, Kansas, Police told me that officers responded to a shooting/shots fired call in the 3100 block of North 128th Street at 6:40 a.m. The victim was dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot. Officer Troy Rice wouldn't identify the shooting victim until the family has been identified.
On Wednesday, March 25, 2009 at about 0641 hours, the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department responded to the 3100 Block of N. 128th St. on a shooting call. Upon arrival, officers located a white male in his early forties, dead inside the residence.Update (3:53 p.m., Wednesday, March 25): I just spoke with Nathan F. Garrett, one of Marc Conklin's attorneys. He issued this statement:
Next of kin has been notified. The deceased individual has been identified as Marc D. Conklin.
The Kansas City, Kansas Police Department's Major Case Unit is currently conducting a death investigation in regards to this incident.
Marc was a friend and a good man. This is a horrible tragedy. March had many things going on in his life beyond his criminal case. While we were confident about proving his innocence, our interest now rests solely with his family.

Why would you place blame on his wife do you even know her? I really doubt it. I don't know the person that he shacked up with and i really don't care to. Anyone who has an affair knowing that a person is married isn't much anyway. Maybe she thought that she would get a piece of some of that money he supposly stole from BPU. His wife is a wonderful person who has never treated anyone wrong and doesn't deserve to be torn down.
its funny that these two that go by "libby & NoMorCrook" have so much bs to talk when they don't even know the real story.
marc wasn't held up with a "hooker" or any kind of person along those lines, she is a great person and i have met her plenty of times.
who you should really be looking at talking smack to or about it is wife that you all think is so wonderful.
and who knows where the money went of if he really did have any only him & God know that.
It looks like his wife caught on to what he was doing. If those of you who think he was such a great guy, where were YOU in giving him the help you think was needed?
Nothing will change. More corrupt people will step in and take over and keep their whores on the side all the while portraying what wonderful family guys they are to the blind and stupid.
You can bet that for the time being they are telling their wives how faithful they are and how they arent involved with any dealings like this guy was.
I feel real sorry for those of you who have such a pitiful and sad life that you have to be so cruel. You obviously have issues that you cant deal with so you need to blast out about someone else. I pray for Marcs family and hope that they don't read such inhumane messages like these. Please seek help it sounds like you need it.
Oh Wow, I am so sorry to Marc's family for having to see these comments.
Anon, you sure claim to know a lot of info about things and have a axe to grind over Gorman. You say this Mark was a good man, guilty or not?
SO if he was guilty, the theft of funds was ok but because of Delaney and Gorman's past, Conklin was an easy target and his life got ruined by not his own actions?? You must know him well the way you take up for his honor..or lack of it.
I hope you were able to get some condolences in at the funeral to help lift some of the guilt you appear to be carrying for whatever reason...or is it that you are involved with BPU or one of the other entities that Conklin had his hands in also and you are on the gravy train too?
Spare us your patronizing defense of your friend. Like already posted, the chickens came home to roost in this corrupt person and he took the easy way out..for him.
At least NOW he saved some local taxpayer and utility consumers money.
PS. Goodman too stupid to live....I guess that we should feel fortunate that DA Jerry Gorman was able to indict the bad guys at the BPU but unable to convict a quadruple murderer. Yes, that's right, while he was busy getting info for his book deal on the Chuck Thompson murder case a guy that walked in a house and killed four people was let back out on the streets because Jerry Gorman was not prepared for his trial. Check that out also while you are at it. But I am guessing facts are not too important in your case.
Goodman....or too stupid to live I should say. Instead of wasting time asking me questions why don't you ask the District Attorney Gorman and KBI Agent Delaney what they were really trying to prove and the BPU was just a convenient target because two other idiots got a petition to call a Grand Jury and those 2 are John Feeback and T.J. Reardon (an ex-con KBI informant). Grand Jury documents of discovery should be public record. Just see for yourself. Greed comes in all forms and disguises and the District Attorney and KBI Agent Delaney are no exception.
Anonymous, you are protecting this guy and making him out to be the 'victim'. How do you know about this 'hounding'? And wrongful death?? are you saying that it wasnt a suicide? It looks like the crooks are the ones that have been indicted. Have to wonder what Turner is thinking now?? Bet he puts it all on Conklin now!
libby says 'what about the hooker he had living with him'?
You look at the news reports and there isnt any mention of this but someone called the shooting in. If it was a hooker there in the house with him how long until she comes out wanting something? If it is indeed like the Duke rape case.
If you are truly an investigative reporter you will investigate the District Attorney Jerry Gorman and KBI AGent Delaney who offered Marc an immunity deal to tell them what he knew about the Chuck Thompson murder. I believe he would have been around 20 years old at the time of the murder and not living in KCK but logic does not enter into these two minds. They have repeatedly stated they are writing a book on the murder case and this was going to complete their book deal for millions of dollars. I hope both of these crooks feel good about what they caused. These two need to be hounded like they hounded the BPU, Mr. Conklin and everyone else. Not to mention wrongful death. This is DA Nifong and the Duke rape case all over again and if you were any kind of reporter this is what you would be writing on.
I have been a critic of BPU, but I am very, very saddened by this. This is shaking, and awful. He is now not a perpetrator, but a victim. I am weak. I too, have not had the courage to call out the real perpetrators. A horrible price has been paid. Real lives are destroyed. When will this WYCO BS stop? It is not cute patronage anymore. It has now reached the worse possible state. What do we do?
Marc WAS a decent man but I think a lot of you havent seen or heard what he has been doing in the last few months. His family knows what his actions have been and his final act was not one of love for anyone. His living it up and his 'found love' was not worth living anymore apparently. Fine example of upstanding citizen to some??
His fate is in God's hands now.
I knew Marc personally and he was a very good-hearted man who allegedly went astray in his business practices at some point. I am so broken hearted over this shooting. May his soul rest in peace now and my prayers are with his family.
what did Mark Conklin do to you?Sound like u know him well.you dont even know if he was guilty.only marc and GOD
At least this 'good person' wont be a burden on the prison system. Co-workers say 'he has just been holed-up for the last month and a half'. Yeah, holed up with a hooker!
Rest of the crooks out there..like the AIG managers, take note....this guy did everyone a favor pulling that trigger.
i just want to tell ever one the good person he was.ive been a dear freind for a long time.He loved his sister and brothers alot. and the love he had for his two prescious boys, i can,t even put in words. loved his parents he always enjoyed family gatherings.i just want to say rest in peace god bless.
what happens now with the missing money??
what about the hooker he had living with him?
