| Mike Thompson |
You might remember last year when Fox 4's chief meteorologist Mike Thompson compared environmentalists to Hitler's disciples. Well, if being called a genocidal maniac pissed you off, too bad, hippie. Because Mike Thompson has God's word that he's right.
Thompson has been taking his admonishments to the pews of metro churches, including St. Joseph's in Shawnee, where he's a member. Recently, a friend of the Plog e-mailed us the text of Thompson's argument printed in a church newsletter.
Thompson's argument essentially comes down to the idea that God
designed the planet in such a way that it prevents us from doing any
harm, no matter what.
"God created a resilient earth," reads
the newsletter account of his presentation. "(Thompson) stated that to
keep earth's balance, God designed it to sustain us and feels there is
evidence to support this view." The text later cautions that "If we get
good stewards to reduce wastes, understand what IS really going on and
influence policy we will be able to focus on the real problems:
Pollution & getting funds where they need to be. We need to be
better informed to prevent scare factors, like the current concern over
polar bears and not drilling for oil in Alaska. The real reason behind
this scare is to get people to react for someone else's own personal
causes."
I called the church, and the polite woman who answered the phone confirmed that Thompson had given a presentation there sometime in the last year and that his views had been printed. She promised someone would call me to discuss it, but no one from the church called back.
When I e-mailed Thompson at Fox 4, I got a response from the station's executive producer and community affairs manager, Carrie Hibbeler saying, "Unfortunately, Mike is not available for an interview." Considering how outspoken Thompson's been in the past, I don't know why he wouldn't want to discuss his evangelizing now.
So the next time you're watching Thompson forecast a horrible tornado that could rip the roof off your home, or flooding that could put you on the roof, see if he gets on his knees and asks Jesus to swoop down and stop the weather. He certainly believes it could happen. Then again, maybe he's just trying to keep you from changing the channel.
Update: Fox 4's Web site tells us Thompson is trustworthy because he has "the American Meteorlogical Society (AMS) Seal of Approval." Turns out the AMS disagrees with Thompson. Here's the group's official statement on climate change:
There is adequate evidence from observations and interpretations of climate simulations to conclude that the atmosphere, ocean and land surface are warming; that humans have significantly contributed to this change; and that further climate change will continue to have important impacts on human societies, on economies, on ecosystems and on wildlife through the 21st century and beyond.

Creating a Mosque at Ground Zero has got to be the un thought through idea in the history of mankind, I really do think that it's purposely specifically designed, at very best, to insight conflict. I'm not much a conspiracy theorist yet somehow it's either shameful or hateful, probably the two of them. wilda
I hadn't heard that Mike Thompson had a rational attitude about the ecoterrorists. Good for him.
Invest,
Fixed. Thanks for the heads up. At least it was correct in the headline. Unfortunately, the spellcheck feature on the plog program is a bit spotty.
Someday after the apocalypse will the left behind nonbelievers look at each other and sigh "Mike Thompson said ti would be like this"?
Trevor, you should go hit yourself in the head with a hammer beause you're an idiot.
Peter, I would be curious as to what the AMS has to say on the actions of the meteorgodligist. You should give them a ring.
Just wanted to note that this post has been updated.
Trevor, regarding your accusation that I want to bash people who believe in Jesus - I'm actually with him on the faith thing. But saying God is personally fighting climate change is a horrible argument on the theological level alone.
Certainly there is no denying that Mike Thompson is an underachiever on the weather forecasting front. But, it sounds like he could get 100% accuracy if he predicted that The Pitch will go to any lengths to spin crazy stories against anyone that believes in Jesus or using common sense to confront environmental issues.
