Kansas coal fight in NY Times

Green Inc., The New York Times' blog on energy and the environment, noticed Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius' coal bill veto. Senate Majority Leader Derek Schmidt even conceded that a veto override is unlikely. But here's the key:

The battle in Kansas could have real-world effects on electricity prices in the state. Coal is the cheapest source of electricity generation in this country -- and as my colleague Felicity Barringer noted in a recent article,

reducing coal consumption in the Midwest -- whether through state action

or through federal climate legislation -- could cause rates to rise.

So clean air isn't without a price tag.
