This week: Celebrate Earth Day in the cinema, the public forum or out in the field; get schooled by local and national experts on how to stem the foreclosure hemorrhaging; be part of the dedication of Precious Doe Memorial Park; and hear the thoughts of a now-famous mom who's still rallying activists against the Iraq war years after her son's death.

StandUp for Kids, a group that works to get homeless youth into safer settings, is new to town and looking for help. They're pounding the pavement for "48 Hours on the Street" this weekend, but first they need donations of school supplies, food and hygiene products to distribute. If you've got a backpack or six-pack of Coke to spare, e-mail kansascity@standupforkids.org and let Andrea know.

The stunning earth-images in the eco-documentary Baraka can be best appreciated on the big screen, and lucky for Earth Day celebrants, the local chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council is showing the film Wednesday at the Screenland at 6:30 p.m. The $3 donation also includes popcorn, a short presentation about area green building efforts and ways to get involved in the local chapter.

Speaking of Earth Day, Imagine KC, an effort to get residents talking about ways to make this Cowtown more sustainable, culminates Wednesday night. To join in the conversation, broadcast live on KCPT, register to attend a public forum at one of the satellite locations. You'll even get a "light dinner" in exchange for your eco-opinions.

Just a few days before the annual walk, the Millennial League, a group of 20-somethings dedicated to raising awareness about HIV/AIDS, is getting together for a blow-out Happy Hour at Mint on Thursday from 8 to 10 p.m. The $2 donation will help fund the group's AIDS Walk team this weekend.

To stem the bleeding of foreclosures and arm residents against employment discrimination, the City of Kansas City is convening a day-long "Protecting Civil Rights in a Time of Economic Crisis" summit on Friday. Speakers include the director of the Washington, D.C., bureau of the NAACP and breakout sessions about real estate shenanigans. The free event runs from 8:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Embassy Suites Hotel (220 W. 43rd St.).

It's casual Friday, so a little lunch-time dirt won't hurt. Honor TGIF and Arbor Day, by helping the Unified Government plant trees at Waterway Park in Kansas City, Kansas, from noon to 3 p.m. on Friday.

A Unity March will parade down 63rd Street Saturday morning to commemorate murdered toddler Erica Green and call for the protection of the community's youth. The 10 a.m. march starts at 4800 East 63rd Street and end at 59th and Kensington for a dedication of Precious Doe Memorial Park and a "Prayer Service for Our Children." Sign up here.

Those in favor of "sound money" and a return to the gold standard will gather again for an "End the Fed" rally at the Federal Reserve Bank Saturday at noon. Later that evening, the Liberty Restoration Project hosts a fundraiser at the Brick and Sunday the group continues with a day-long education summit on issues ranging from food to immigration.

She couldn't take out House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in her bid for Congress last year, but Cindy Sheehan still rallies a crowd with her pointed criticism of the Iraq war. You might be able to spot her among the ranks of Kansas City's peace activists at J.C. Nichols Fountain Sunday afternoon before a 6 p.m. engagement at the Uptown Theater -- which also doubles as a fundraiser for KKFI community radio.
