This week: Let Missouri legislators know you won't stand for a lower minimum wage and half-ass sex education; help the local women's political caucus by shelling out a few bucks to be inspired by an equal rights' activist every woman should thank; and celebrate May Day with area workers who want justice for everyone who puts in a hard day's work on American soil.

Thanks to a green-thumbed librarian at the Bluford Branch of the Kansas City Public Library, there's a new community garden forming at 31st Street and Wabash Avenue. E-mail marythompson@kclibrary.org to get involved.

The legislative session is nearly finished, but its never too late to make sure your lawmakers know you're watching. A coalition including Planned Parenthood and PROMO are heading to the Capitol on Tuesday to lobby for the Prevention First Act, which repeals current restriction on comprehensive sex education in schools. Meet at the Sheraton at 9103 E. 39th St. at 7 a.m.; the bus will be back by 5 p.m.

Jobs with Justice is also planning a Tuesday trip to testify before the state Senate. If you work for tips and you're pissed that the Missouri House already voted to roll back your minimum wage, the JwJ group is leaving from the SEIU office at 4526 Paseo at 8:45 a.m. and will return by 4 p.m. For free transit and lunch, call Darnell Johnson at (816) 805-2385 to RSVP today.

The school board spent last week interviewing administrators brave enough to throw their hat in the revolving door ring for the superintendent post at the Kansas City Missouri School District. Meet the last candidates standing Wednesday night during a public forum from 6 to 8 p.m. at Paseo Academy.

As a manager for Goodyear tires, Lilly Ledbetter was paid peanuts compared to her male counterparts for years. When she sued, alleging discrimination, the Supreme Court said she had no case because she hadn't filed her claim within the 180-day statute of limitations. In January, that ridiculous constraint was eliminated with the Lilly Ledbetter Equal Pay Act and on Wednesday night the equal rights' activist will be the keynote speaker at the Greater Kansas City Women's Political Caucus. Get your tickets here.

They may have lost in front of the City Plan Commission, but Westside residents are still fighting a second power substation in their neighborhood. Opponents of KCP&L's proposed facility will meet Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Irene Ruiz branch of the Kansas City Public Library to gear up for a hearing before the City Council.

Comprehensive immigration reform, an end to family-terrorizing raids and the passage of the Employee Free Choice Act are just a few of the rallying cries for a May Day demonstration in Washington Park from 4 to 6:30 p.m. on Friday. More information here.

With all those invasives eating up their ecosystem, remnant prairies need plenty of help from area resident to avoid oblivion. Plant native grasses and rip out intrusive vegetation during Kansas City WildLands' spring planting on Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon.
