Six things to do this weekend

1. It's First Friday, y'all, and that means the Crossroads will be hoppin' with people interested in art (and a lot of people who pretend to be interested in art but are really just trying to rustle up free drinks and snacks and the appearance of sophistication). One of the bombest art openings happening tonight is at Mercy Seat, the tattoo parlor/art gallery at 206 East 16th Street. This month's artist is Dusty Colyer, a photographer and BMX cyclist. As usual, the festivities also include some rock and roll. The Sixteens and Black Gasoline will perform in the alley behind the venue.

2. Not too far away, in the Westside neighborhood, a pre-Cinco de Mayo party will be under way at the Guadalupe Center. Fiesta-ivities, including live music, Mexican food and a whole lotta mariachis, extend throughout the weekend. Admission is free.

3. Meanwhile, very far away from the Crossroads, there's a one-night screening of a movie made right here in the metro with a local cast and crew. The supernatural thriller Ravage is showing at the Rio Theatre.

4. Sorta in between the Crossroads and Johnson County is that yuppie cool neighborhood known as Brookside. Art is strewn all around that area throughout the weekend, too. The Brookside Art Annual kicks off at 5 p.m. today.

5. On Saturday, take your dog to the hospital -- but not because he's sick! The University of Kansas Medical Center's Outreach Program and the Rosedale Development Association are putting on Pet Palooza, a celebration of how awesome it is to have animals in your life. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., find booths with information about pet health, pet nutrition and more.

6. Saturday also happens to be opening day for the Kansas City Organics farmers market in Minor Park. The weekly market runs from 8:30 a.m. until noon.

I just wanted to say I like your blog! I was clicking around on some different blogs when I found this blog. After checking out this site I've come up with some great ideas for a new site. I just thought I'd let you in on it
