Bikers will save Troost

Posted by Peter Rugg on Tue, May 12, 2009 at 6:45 AM

This afternoon, Nadia Pflaum and I stopped by the best-looking new

store on Troost, which happens to be a motorcycle shop. If you ride,

this is our new pick for where you need to take your bike when the

engine needs work.

Louis Brucker, Ross Thompson, Jon Vera, Woody McGrain, Whitney Hahn, Jim Hoke, and Brady Thro

Located at 5508 Troost, Blue Star Motorcycle Co. opened in January as a motorcycle repair, customization and resale store. Co-owners Ross Thompson and Jim Hoke said they had motorcycles and clients lined up before the doors were even open. Today next to their work station, more than a dozen motorcycles were parked waiting for their tune-ups.

Thompson, originally from Springfield, Missouri, operated one bike shop more than a decade ago in Baltimore. "It failed miserably," he said.

He learned from his mistakes and this time balances repair work with custom jobs. The shop also carries a limited supply of helmets and clothing. It's already doing well enough that Thompson says he plans to expand to a second location, though he's still searching for a space.

Thompson isn't a snob about his manufacturers or motorcycle fashion either. "We're just into motorcycles," he says. The shop works on all brands. He's personally been customizing a Yamaha now parked in the store's window, and a Harley was being serviced during our visit.

He's more likely to be annoyed by someone buying an expensive ride that they won't be willing or wealthy enough to maintain, or a customer cheaping out on a helmet. "You barely have enough for the bike, now you're going to buy a cheap helmet? What's your head worth to you?"

Aside from the fact that they come off as no-bullshit, decent guys, we have to commend the place just for looking great on a block of Troost that can use more businesses. Hopefully, it keeps getting the support it deserves, and a few more local entrepreneurs will join them.

They will pay what current loan value is on the vehicle. If there is no loan value, they will refer to the "blue book" for value. They will not negotiate.

I know Ross from his Baltimore shop. Great guy and definitely can work on whatever you bring him. He worked on a race car of mine with a Suzuki motorcycle engine and fabricated some unbelievable stuff for me. You guys are lucky to have him in your town!
