This week: Don't let Power & Light be the last word on downtown redevelopment, understand the connection between your automobile and environmental Armageddon and score a few bucks for the United Way by taking in possibly the most kick-ass game of the soccer season.

Thankfully, the discussion about the revitalization of downtown didn't end with the erection of the Power & Light District. The city is gathering citizen input for a Greater Downtown Area Plan, which will guide policy and development decisions for the area. Tonight at 5:30 at the Central Library, city staffers will host a public meeting on the effort.

Despite economic stimulus for infrastructure, Missouri roads are fast approaching a funding cliff. Before the fall, the Missouri Transportation Alliance was established to meet with stakeholders and establish regional priorities. The group hasn't spent much time talking to urban residents or alternative commuters, so the Kansas City stop could be a breath of fresh air. Give your feedback Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at the Mid-America Regional Council.

If you think grassroots activism is an exercise in futility, the ACLU proved you wrong last week when their efforts pushed the Kansas City Police Department to reconsider its decision to drop domestic partner benefits. The ACLU holds its monthly meeting at its Broadway office Wednesday at 7 p.m.

ReEnergize KC helps local residents envision a future that doesn't rely on gulping down every last drop of petroleum. On Thursday night, the group is showing Crude Impact, a film that "explores the interconnection between human domination of the planet, and the discovery and use of oil," at the Discovery Center. After the 6:30 p.m. screening, there will be a panel discussion, including experts like Daniel Dermitzel of the Kansas City Center for Urban Agriculture.

The surgeon general warns that drinking while pregnant can do major damage to your unborn child. But if you don't have a bun in the oven, bottoms up for premature babies. March of Dimes, which raises money to fund research on various causes of infant mortality, hosts its annual Wine Fest from 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday at Union Station.

The United Way of Wyandotte County picked a stellar night to take a cut of Wizards' tickets sales. On Saturday, when Kansas City's professional soccer club takes on Chivas at 7:30 p.m., fans will be treated to what will likely be one of the most spirited bouts of the year. If you buy your tickets from Nikki Shepard -- 913.387.3429 or nshephard@kcwizards -- and mention their promotion, the United Way will get a cut of the proceeds.
