Thanks for noticing, CNN

You just never know what CNN's batty home page is gonna have for you.

This morning, alongside "Space station crew tastes recycled urine" and

"Old wars, new wars, devastation is the same" (which is a little bit

Marcus Aurelius and a little bit Harry Chapin), the big story is

headlined "Whites become minority in Kansas county."

The lead:
Hundreds of U.S. communities are changing complexion. Though not new in

California, Arizona, Texas or Florida, the change of demographics is

more surprising in southwest Kansas. Finney County, Kansas, is one of

six counties across the nation that became majority-minority between

2007 and 2008, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

More surprising than what, CNN? The smooth flavor of space pee? Or the shock of media-driven xenophobia?

You also have to consider that one of the major employers in Garden City is Tyson formerly IBP meatpacking plant. The majority of the employees are non-white where they can make more in an hour that what they'd make in a day back home.

Then we can look forward to the eventual CNN headline about a Kansas dairy farm where the cows give nacho cheese.

"the change of demographics is more surprising in southwest Kansas?"

Only surprising if you've never looked at a map. Garden City is less than 150 miles from New Mexico, and the most SW part of KS is only 60 miles. Southwest KS is definitely SW, although I think people in coastal population centers kind of think we're somewhere around Wisconsin.

I saw that this morning and thought, "What the Hell?" Glad I'm not the only one. :)
