I missed this Friday, but the city finally shut down the 12th Street bridge after an inspection found "structural deficiencies." Really? Really? What took you so long? Driving across the 12th Street bridge always felt like a perilous journey over a rope bridge teetering on the verge of snapping. The bridge was great for snapping axles or popping out fillings.
Earlier this year, CJ wrote about the bridge's money-sucking ways, and just this month, I wasn't surprised to find the bridge down to two, metal plate-covered lanes.
The city says this is the final phase of construction to fix up the crumbly bridge and won't reopen it until repairs are finished later this summer.
See ya in a few months, West Bottoms dwellers.

I used to work in the West Bottoms, in the Livestock Exchange building and would like to 2nd Realist's comments.
There are several alternate routes into the West Bottoms.
1) Go north from 6th on Broadway, and bear to the right - don't take the bridge to the downtown airport. Stay to the right, go straight on through the stop sign, then bear left to catch Woodswether Road, which runs along the river's edge paralleling the I-70 viaduct. Cross streets take you down into the Bottoms proper.
2) Take the James Street exit off I-70 in KCK, just past the viaduct. Follow the UPS trucks, and keep going straight past where they turn. You'll eventually wind up at the 12th Street bridge, just from the other direction.
3) About a block west of Summit on Southwest Boulevard - right before the railroad bridge - turn north, then bear to the left. When that road ends, turn left and you'll wind up at Kemper Arena/American Royal.
