The law finally caught up with a man suspected of shooting and killing his wife Monday in Fairway, Kansas.

The Los Angeles Times reports that authorities spotted Franklin L. Grammer Jr's pick-up truck in the parking lot of an Econo Lodge in Gorman, California, Thursday morning.

It was the beginning of what turned into an eight-hour standoff between Grammer and a Los Angeles County sheriff's special weapons team. The standoff finally ended around 12:30 p.m. when Grammer hung up on negotiators and wouldn't answer repeated calls.

Tear gas was fired in the room, and officers "found Grammer in bed suffering from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the upper body." A pistol was also found in the room.

Grammer was flown to a hospital where he was last listed in critical condition.

Fairway police say Grammer is a person of interest in the death his wife, Betty Grammer, who was fatally shot Monday.

Betty Grammer's death is Fairway's first homicide in five years.

Update (10:35 a.m., Friday, June 12): Fairway police say Franklin Grammer Jr. was arrested in Santa Clarita, California, Thursday for the murder of his wife, Betty Jo Grammer. Franklin Grammer is charged in Johnson County District Court with premeditated first-degree murder. Grammer is being held in California on $1 million bond.
