Come forward, sign defacer!

Someone around town has a serious issue with the signs for Rebilt Homes.

The signs, which read, "Why Rent?" and brag that a minimum of $500 down can buy a home, have been defaced with black spray paint to read "NO" or "BAD." They've been spotted along Troost, Wornall, and 31st and Broadway.

The picture above was taken near 80th and Troost by the strip mall that houses G's Jamaican Cuisine and China Dragon. Another was on the ground near the bus stop at 89th and Troost, and there used to be several more along this stretch.

Is this someone's reaction to disastrous subprime mortgage schemes, or the fly-by-night companies that have sprung up in the wake of the lending crisis, offering wacky financing to people unfamiliar with home buying? We'd love to know the identity and the motives of this crusader whose strategy is much more effective than, say, just tearing the signs down.

Other, more homemade-looking signs have also felt the wrath of the anonymous vigilante.

This photo was taken near 75th and Campbell. As of last week there were

as many as four "No" signs on the north side of 75th Street, from Troost to

Wornall. A cluster of the signs, poked into the ground at the

intersection of 31st and Broadway, bore similar defacing a month or so

ago.

Text on the Web site for RebiltHomes.net promises: "Yes, you can own the home of your dreams. You deserve your own home!!! You've worked hard!! You deserve it!"

According to the Kansas Secretary of State's Web site, the company first formed in 1995 and has been listed under the name Salon Suites, LLC, and Redmon Housing, LLC. The mailing address is 4505 Metropolitan Avenue in KCK.

A receptionist who answered at the 913 phone number on the "Why rent?" sign said owner Bob

Redmon wasn't around, but the manager, Bernie Gonzales, was available. Gonzales said he had no idea who was painting over the company's

advertisements.

"They do it to all the signs, so there's

nothing we can do," Gonzales said. "It's probably some high school

teenagers trying to do pranks, trying to impress their friends."

So he doesn't think it could be a disgruntled customer trying

to make a statement? "If they were disgruntled, I'm sure they'd let us

know by contacting us," Gonzales said. "If someone really has a

complaint, I'm sure they could come up with a more legitimate way to

solve whatever problem they have."

A legitimate way ... like calling us! If anyone out there knows what the real deal is, let us know.

I agree witht he first comment. If that is the companies form of advertising than you get what you pay for. If they were a sound company and offered a quality service then they would act like one and use a better form of advertising such as mailings, billboards or radio! Oh wait a minute, that might create jobs and contribute to the local economy (so people could afford to buy a home).

Maybe they should try letting balloons with messages inside float around town or put them in bottles and float them down Brush Creek!

It isn't teenagers or random vandals. No other types of signs are painted over.

I think it's someone commenting on predatory lending. Who is it?

Since these signs are posted illegally I say anything goes including painting over them.
