A Johnson County Sheriff's deputy found 37-year-old Darrell Morrison hanging in his cell in the New Century Adult Detention Center around 6:45 a.m. Monday.

Deputies and an on-duty nursing staff members tried lifesaving measures and Med-Act responded to the scene, but Morrison was pronounced dead.

Morrison was found guilty in May of aggravated criminal sodomy with a child and was scheduled to be in court Monday. He had been in custody since May 16, 2007.

Morrison's suicide is the ninth in the Johnson County jail system since 1988.

The police should have kept a closer eye on this inmate - his alleged crime is one that should never be condoned, and he deserves to be tried and punished to the full extent. He did not deserve the easy way out.
