Let's play Rhiannon Ally for a second.
More red-light cameras go live today. The latest will be at the intersections of:

Ah, Rhiannon... *sighs dreamily*
When the Star reported on the intersections which were candidates for the cameras, they documented the durations of the yellow lights in those locations. For the reason DLC mentions, this is kinda important.
I don't remember the exact numbers, but the yellow light at 39th and SW Trfwy was actually a fraction longer than the one at 27th and SW Trfwy. The problem? The speed limit is 35 at the former and 45 at the latter.
Since acceleration (and therefore deceleration) is a relationship of squares, a car going the speed limit would take 65% longer to stop at 27th than 39th, despite the shorter yellow.
Cse dice "cash grab"?
(And, more importantly, is Rhiannon impressed by Spanish and math skills?)
The only times I run red lights are when I miscalculate the length of a yellow light. I'll bet that is by far the most common scenario. With red light cameras, they penalize you every single time; there is no cop to make a rational decision about whether your offense was ticketworthy. I feel like the city is sort of violating the spirit of the law by ticketing offenders, the vast majority of whom just made a slight mistake.
Here's a thought: if you don't want a ticket, don't run red lights. Problem solved, and there would no longer be a need for red light cameras.
