A two car collision led Kansas City police to the city's 73rd homicide. Officers patrolling 67th and Monroe found 26-year-old Carleton Temple, of KCMO, suffering from a gunshot wound inside a wrecked car around 4:33 a.m. Temple was pronounced dead at the scene.
The weekend bloodshed started Friday night with a double shooting in the 5400 block of Highland. A man in his 30s and a toddler (2- to 3-year-old girl) were shot in a drive-by. The man's injuries were not life threatening and "he did not want to prosecute," police said. The toddler's injuries were considered life threatening.
Witnesses told police that a dark colored car drove by the residence and fired into a group of about 40 people in a front yard. Police haven't given an update on the toddler's condition.
Early Saturday morning, a 17-year-old man fired shots at two police officers in a park at 67th and Paseo. Police say they were investigating a "suspicious person" call around 2:12 a.m. when they encountered the teen and a chase ensued. The teenager pointed a gun at the in the 1800 block of East 67th Terrace, and they shot the teen to disable him. The teenager was taken to a local hospital with potentially life threatening injuries. No update on his condition has been given.

Dear Pitch: Thanks for continually posting the figures on the city's exploding homicide rate. Since the city establishment has just forced Chief Corwin to issue one of those statements that cities always issue when crime explodes: "Well, homicides may be up sharply, but other forms of crime are down" (DC former mayor Marion Barry used to say: "Aside from the murders, DC is one of the safest cities in the country"--"Aside from that, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you enjoy the play?"), it is worth noting that the Chief is probably technically correct when he says reported crime is down. However, it is down not because crimes are not being committed, it is down because the criminal elements and gangs are so strong that people are afraid to report crimes--witness the man who refused to press charges against the people who shot his two-year old daughter. The city of KCMO as we know it may be imploding. Sincerely and Respectfully, Ernest Evans
