The girlfriend of the man shot to death in the 10700 block fo Stark Sunday night told police that the victim had assaulted her the day before causing her to seek medical treatment, according to court documents.
The woman told police that she returned to the home at 10718 Stark to get her personal belongings, but the victim, 42-year-old Anthony Melson, had blocked the door with a couch and wouldn't let her into the home. A relative of the woman and 38-year-old Kris L. Ruff stood on the home's front porch and were arguing with Melson when Ruff began firing shots from a handgun into the home. Everyone fled.
Ruff surrendered to police Tuesday but refused to make a statement.
Jackson County prosecutors charged Ruff today with second-degree murder and armed criminal action.

Neighbors Say Group of Men Seen Leaving KC Murder Scene; Not one person stated they saw Vanessa at the scene.
