Get your high school band evolution T-shirts!

Administrators at Smith-Cotton High School banned members of the school's marching band from wearing the T-shirt pictured above after a few parents complained about its nod to the iconography showing man evolving from primates. The image fit the band's theme for the year, "Brass Evolutions," and each figure on the chart holds a brass instrument.

The parent making the most noise: Sherry Melby, a teacher at Smith-Cotton and the mother of a band member.

"I was disappointed with the image on the shirt," Melby told the Sedalia Democrat. "I don't think evolution should be associated with our school."

The shirts were made by Main Street Logo in Sedalia, Missouri, and they're really, really popular.

"We're just getting too many requests," says Jack Lewis, who co-owns Main Street with Mike Ingram. "We're getting them from foreign countries, about all the states."

Lewis says Main Street isn't taking sides. But it is taking orders for the shirts.

"We own the artwork, so we can do whatever we want," Lewis says. But he's also cautious. "We want to be friendly [to the school], and we don't want to create any problems for the school."

Nobody ever considered making a political statement about evolution

when the idea for the shirts was conceived, Lewis says.

"It was a just

a play on words. Who knew this was going to blow up like this?"

If you're interested in getting one of the shirts, e-mail Main Street at mainstreet@sedaliamissouri.com. It's also on Facebook.

If that is the actual Beetle Bob two posts below me let me be the first one to say that you are an inconsiderate jerk and you need to stop shoving people out of your way at rock concerts.

Beetle Bob is an asshole.

And what I also get from everyone being so pissed because they put this on their shirts is that it's a THEROY and it has to do with their show I'm assuming. I don't know any group that puts something on their band shirts for the year that doesn't have anything to do with the show. They don't want to accept the fact that it's a theory or anything because they are too damn stubborn to look at the other side and not just their's.

It should be associated with the school, religion should not. Religion should stay out of public schools. It doesn't belong in public schools, there are places for that to be in like private schools and churches. I support SCHS band 100%. I'll buy one.

Please PLEASE don't associate all of us in Sedalia with what's going on.

The last time we made headlines outside our town some guy needed to drill a hole through his wall but didn't have a bit long enough so he used his rifle. And shot his wife.

I know we don't offer the best picture of ourselves to the rest of the world but some of us are still fairly intelligent.

MO is the laughing stock of the country. Universities should stop admitting students from school districts that do not teach science.

Some folks are so outraged at the idea that we're descended from monkeys that they devote considerable effort to proving it.

Wow... Wouldn't want to have and EDUCATION going on at the school. Nice. Does it piss you off to have the rest of the world laugh at you?

So you want to leave it up to crazy parents to decide what should be taught? We see how well this has worked out for you... I blame Grandma!

It would seem only fair that Main Street Logo donate some of the funds to the school band.

As embarrassing as it might be, there are some religious fundamentalists who cannot accept the fact of evolution --reality doesn't "take sides"... it just is.

This is hilarious to people all over the world--particularly biologists, like myself, who see the Sedalia folks as being on par with those who insist that the shape of the earth is flat (or that there is a "controversy" about it's shape in the scientific community.)

My students chuckled heartily and the backwards folks in Sedalia. Evolution is a fact, and reality isn't going to change just because it doesn't fit with someone's preconceptions, fairytales, myths, or faith.

i'm not sure i understand the problem. is there some kind of controversy over the idea of evolution itself? because i'm not sure what the argument could be.

I read with great dismay about the banishment of evolution theme t-shirts. As far as I'm concerned, I'M A BELIEVER in musical evolution, and this genre of evolution is not based on religion or science. In fact, I have a video link (see very bottom),of unrefutable proof that musical evolution is a STEPPIN' STONE to further musical enhancements.

P.S. I hsincerely hope that the kids of the Smith-Cotton High fall program have more fun than a barrelful of Monkees.
