Shut up, shut up, shut up! Chris Stigall edition

President Barack Obama plans to speak to high school students nationwide Tuesday in a speech simulcast in U.S. classrooms. The message: Stay in school. Work hard. Oh, and stay in school.

Pretty much what you'd expect, right? And pretty much unimpeachable as a reasonable concept. You tell your teenage kid to have a good day, then send her off to school, confident in the knowledge that today, the president of the United States will help you convey the idea that success starts with education.

But wait -- Obama is president of a crass talkocracy, so, thanks to calls and e-mails from "concerned parents" inflamed by right-wing broadcasters and columnists, districts in several states, including Independence here in the metro, have said the address won't reach kids in their schools.

Our local flaming pundit: Chris Stigall, quoted by The New York Times this week (with a line that made it as far away as Australia):

And Chris Stigall, a Kansas City talk show host, said, "I wouldn't let my next-door neighbor talk to my kid alone; I'm sure as hell not letting Barack Obama talk to him alone."
Thanks, Chris, for keeping KC on the dipshit watch list.

Update: The Kansas City, Missouri, School District will have it both ways, according to a press release that reads, in part:

More than 25 of the District's 54 schools will show the president's live back to school message during their school day. Students who do not want to view the president's message will attend class.

"Freedom of choice is a hallmark of this country, and the District does not want to simply dismiss the desires of our community members regarding this event," said Dr. John Covington, Superintendent. "Our schools were given the option of participating in this event, and we'll support those that choose to host a viewing of President Obama's message. However, we want to also ensure that no student misses out on vital classroom instruction."

Who knew high school was all about students' freedom of choice? Thanks, Stigall and fellow shameless blowhards, for making schools another battleground for the political fringe.

Odd... I just came across your blog by looking for 'financial spreadbetting' on Bing. But I can't find any articles about that subject on here?

it's the gushing of media, the relationships between the current administration and media is undeniable, this relentless romance has turned into an inability for media to be media, it's simply become an infomercial- look at G.E.- owners of an entire network, the CEO fined for blatant lying to the SEC, yet given a position on the presidential advisory board and oh yeah, lots of bailout money- and his network news bows to obama, no more reporting- just promotion. this school film is just another promo for the admin- it's sad. journalism becoming the glee club. media savvy - wonderful. its a media affair- not a debate. but it seems it's more important to bail out all the badness, lower expectations and provide neat-o cable boxes, so they can keep watching. I believe John Lennon said that the first sign of communism is when the government takes over health care, now lets take a page from fidel and talk to the children.. silence Hillary... oh, whatever- it's not a debate, its indoctrination..

Even Bill O'Reilly thinks kids should listen to Obama. Geez, right wing nutbags, I thought you listened to your God( and read your Parade magazine diligently) http://www.parade.com/news/200...

People need to remember that 46% of the people did not vote for Obama so yes, maybe some of this is just sour grapes.

Other parts come down to what if Bush had tried to do the same? With as much as the left (especially the teachers unions) were hating him do you think they would have opened up there classrooms as easily to Bush?

Also one needs to look at what the different teachers will do with the speech. If they are democrats they will play it up. If they are republican or other they will talk it down.

Do we really want our kids exposed to that?

I dont think its wrong if Obama wants to start a new tradition of an opening day of school speech. But, if the next president is a republican the schools better not object.

Stigall is boring and predicatble. Only suprise you ever get from him is how shitty his arguments will be. He makes Darla Jay sound like William F Buckley

Chris Stigall couldn't keep a job playing classic rock so now he recycles Fox BS on an underpowered AM station. How sad, really.

The problem is the left wing nutz fight the right wing nutz. Those of us who know there is a middle ground need to make them all shut up, and then we will be better off. Not all of our problems originated with the Bush administration, and not all of the Obama administrations programs are bad. But if think the opposite in either case, you may be a nut.

I contacted the local car dealer that Stigall reads ads for and told them that if I was in the market for a car, I would avoid them because Stigall insults me and poisons the well of public debate.

The wing-nutz are getting crazier everyday. Whipped into a bottom-feeding frenzy by Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh over shit that don't mean shit.

President George HW Bush did the same thing his first Labor Day in office.

Stay in school, don't join a gang, stay away from drugs and alcohol.

Damn subversive message, eh?
