Deer defenders cause traffic jam -- but no arrests -- at Shawnee Mission Park

On Saturday afternoon, when law enforcement officers informed Jason Miller that he couldn't use an amplification device on the grounds of Shawnee Mission Park, the animal rights activist politely crossed the street with his megaphone, continuing to protest in a legal manner.

But between his calls to save the deer from the impending harvest in the 1,200-acre Johnson County green space, Miller confided that Sunday would be different. He had an action in mind that would likely lead to his arrest.

At 4:30 p.m. the next afternoon, a dozen Bite Club members gathered in the parking lot of a nearby Wendy's. Anticipating he'd be arrested in a defiant act of civil disobedience, Miller left his car and hitched a ride up the hill with another activist. Again, in the interest of caution, the caravan parked on a side street (ignoring a neighbor's demand: "Get off my lawn, dumb shit!").

But when the activists unfurled their 10-foot banner and stood in the middle of a street leading into Shawnee Mission Park, the cops had no interest in hauling Miller to jail. As a dozen Bite Club members tried to "close the park for cruelty," the police officers calmly diverted traffic to avoid the activists.

Here's the activists' video. Read more about Jason Miller and Bite Club in the October 8 issue of The Pitch.

Here is to Jason.

Why don't you go first off the pier, and at least I have my name on this page you coward.

It does not matter if we live by the park or not.

Here's my question. Does the Miller fella or any of these protesters live in the area of this park?

To Chris:

The deer were absolutely not there first. Deer are not native to Kansas and especially not this region. Humans introduced the deer because they are fun to shoot at without a long range plan to "cull" the population with a natural predator.
In this case, humans are becoming the natural predator because these deer are going to die either way. In a population curve, once your animal population reaches it's peak for what the ecosystem can handle there is a mass die off. It might be because of starvation or disease. In this case we are inducing the mass die off while the deer meat will still be useful.
I urge anyone involved in this situation to research animal population dynamics and ecology instead of making arguements fueled with emotion for bambis mom.

I agree with you Chris; the world is overpopulated with humans. Lets take a proactive approach on this and start with you taking a long walk off a short pier, and take Miller with you. Don't be a toughguy behind a monitor...makes you look as weak as your "cause".

If you have not noticed, humans are very much over populated, and we need to decrease our numbers.

People are also starving around the world, does that mean we need to kill them too?

Wendy's was just a meeting place, they did not eat anything you dumb f***.

The deer have a right to live too. If you don't want them in your yard, than just put a fence around it you moron. So what if they drink out the fountains.

To the driver who almost ran over one of the women protesters, why don't you put your self in the hospital, you are so blind.

You are all cold hearted people, the deer were there first not you.

This killing of the deer will come back at all of you in one way or another. I hope you shoot your self in the foot.

I read they had more than enough volunteers from JOCO public safety lining up to kill bambi. I agree with the culling but am sickened by the bloodthirsty public saftey officer volunteers.

To hell with jail, send the stupid bastard to the hospital. Someone should have run him over. It's not like he was standing in the crosswalk.
